Missed The Discussion

Wow, guess I have to get here more often. I missed the discussion about the VideoSeconds.com page and probably would have learned a lot if I could see the comments and problems. Is there a way to get at least the critical stuff I need to learn?

As I build out more pages I would really like to keep them looking good. I will try and get here more often to fix stuff up. Most of my time now will be on getting up my personal writing site randypenn.com. As you see it is sick and suffering for my works with other sites.

Randy ps, those new advertisings on the bottom left overflow into the pages. The casino adverts? At first I thought a spammer edited the page but it was not there. It is in your advers. You have to contain them somehow in the sidebar.

'Thanks Mark, I also started to mark the watch pages as I move around and change. Most of these pages need a lot of work to look good. The conversation, or talk, on putting the videoseconds.com page as a feature. I cant find it. I wanted to see what the critique is so I can see where to learn more. I do like a good page. Each time I come in I learn more. Maybe it is time I worked on a catagory to learn more? How do I get the system to update the thumbnail? I went and finally started up my site and want to reflect the page. There are others too that have revamped over the year. I even found the code to sign stuff RandyPenn 11:44, 31 March 2007 (PDT)

I happened to assist the owner in establishing this page, which was implemented less than 24 hours ago, as you can well see. We are by far not done with its overall appearance. Whilst appreciating your having taken it upon yourself to watch out for certain criteria or standards, what you suggest - forgive me - is optically far off the mark in terms of the contents and nature of the website that is portrayed.

Mark, Here's the problem with certain copyrights and what some of the sysops don't want to undersatand... i'll start with an example... Lets say your an artist with a recording label.. you have a new song, and you allow a company to use it in an advertising campaign.. so the ad, with the song shows up on various websites.. the song, nor the ad become property of those websites, andanyone who copies it without permission of the owner, is now liable for the damages... Now on aboutus.org, there's a copyright remplate for iamges.. but who see's it? peopel go to a page containing the image, all they see is the image. And when the actual site owner provides content for the page pertaining to their site, they are doing so themselves, for display on aboutus, for promotional and information reasons. I created a template ffor this type of copyright, which was a disclaimer of the information provided by the owner for aboutus.org only, and any redistrubution or copies are not allowed for use anywhere else.. and other sysop's dont agree with it, and insist on removing it. Not only is that template a warning to potential theives and hordes, but it protects aboutus be not holding them resp-onsable if content from that page is taken by a 3rd party without proper permission. Now with my sites, I can't have them on here as I did without that type of disclaimer on them.. some of the images, and content I have permission to use, but other sdo not, I can plae it where I want to, but no one can legally copy it and use it as their own on other sites. This is something you will find with most multimedia, and entertainment websites, as well as some companies that do a great deal to protect what they have (hence, all the engativity about how aboutus 'steals' information illegally, which isn't true, about us uses publically accessable information, and only takes a section of a front page as a quote, which is fair usage).. The big problem lies in the knowledge, or misknowldedge that there is about copyrights among sysops, recent partollers, etc.. (and yes, it's a tough one since it does vaary by locality, and constanty changes so no one can fully keep up with it all).. an dof course, the never ending problem of anyone being able to edit pages.. which may never truly be resolved in a wiki format. You can take my word on multimedia and etnertainment sites not holding back on this. I've been with them for 20 years, and have seen things less than this turn into major court battles. The main thing that needs to be worked out is simple.. ther eneeds to be an easy to find tempalte available for use on pages, such as the one I created that was removed several times.. which keeps aboutus out of the middle of any copyright disputes, and holds whoever may take the information liable by the owner themselves. You all also have to realize.. only a small percentage of people have even heard of wiki's, never mind know how to use them, find them, even with as much news on aboutus that has been generated, it's stilla very small eprcentage of webmasters that even know aboutus exist. In any post I make concerning aboutus, I do stress how the bot does nothing illegal, it's more of wiki problems itself, and that is totally true, and edittors, especailly those with sysop status, do need to be aware of legalities that can and will arrise. My only suggestion would be to have registered and logged in users able to edit pages, and tweak the bot a bit to exlude whois and some alexa information to aovoid those wh go ape about 'stealing my personal information' (again, they jsut dont get it when it comes to that). Perhaps have a new user menu on the left with nothing but a faq on how to add templates, what is available for your page, etc.. so it's easy to find for the completely wiki illiterate.. that's really the biggest problem, wiki isn't all that popular, and isn't liked by most due to it's 'open editting', and aboutus is new in itself, and a format many have come to ahte due to other sites that have been around that horde and 'scrape' from various sites.

again, my main problem is, adding content to pages about my sites (and I know others will say the same), need a copyrighted content template shown, to keep aboutus safe and not liable, and warn off potential theives.. it's really no differant than placcing a watermark n an image or media file stating 'free for personal use, do not redistribute'. I can't make it any simpler than that. One of my largest affiliates, RCA (SonyBMG) would be one of the first and msot costly to hold a grudge about this sort of thing (luckily, I don't think they are very aware of aboutus.org yet, and I'm not going to tip them off, Ray does have a good idea, it just needs alot of cleaning up, and 'staff' to be brought up to speed on legal issues, which again, can be tricky and vary a bit between localities,, for example, it's actually to legal to bootleg music in parts of europe and canada.. but in the US, it's only legal to download, it's illegal to redistribute in any manner.. when a canadian comes to my site, which is us based, they think it's all legal, I have disclaimers everywhere about that exact topic, stating 'this is a us based website'.. making it clear we follow us laws)

I'll be around a bit more later this week.. work is getting the better of me right now, I got ray's voicemail, and jsut wanted to send this to ya's as an explination of the problem.. again, I'm not pissed t you guys or aboutus, or even certain sysops, I've jsut been in the music, tv, and movie biz for a long time and have dealt with these issues on an almost daily basis. Ray making statements on blogs are great, but there needs to be something for everyone to see right away on aboutus to show he's working on the situations, and a link to a page with various copyright, fair usage, and disclaimer information.. trust me, you'll all be glad you have that when you do (and you kind of do already, it jstu needs to be more visable, as does how to use a robot.txt to block the bot until all the robot tutorials start including the aboutusbot.

p.s. Ray should usderstand this exact problem.. what if you all went to say google, and put a full page for aboutus, using specific content from the site liek the logo, and someone decided to take it and create a simular site to aboutus using all he put on that page? wouldn't be right would it? google wouldn't be at fault, but there was no copyright disclaimer on the page, so they used it all as 'fair usage'.. that is going to happen alot from aboutus pages.. Wikipedia.com etc.

The links to WikiNode and TourBusStop are part of a template that I use when I set up a new user page on a Mediawiki-based wiki. I do it just to see how 'old school' the wiki's administrators are. My personal opinion is that they may have been something worthwhile when there were only two or three dozen wikis, but these days they are pretty useless.

Some of the editors at en.wikipedia.org are going through their interwiki map, and it's pretty amazing the number of the prefix shortcuts in their interwiki map that are 404, moribund wikis, or spam-filled wikis. I have a feeling that most WikiNodes and TourBusStops are just about as useless, with many of the links pointing to problematic websites.

What's the status of WikiIndex, seeing as how most of the people behind that Wiki are involved in AboutUs?

Also: In my rummaging around the website earlier, I didn't see any guidance about categories, or any explanation about how your bot automatically creates categories. Did I miss the page, or is that still on the todo list? BlankVerse 02:11, 9 February 2007 (PST)

Malware Sites

Mark, we need to discuss what to do about sites that attempt to place malware on user machines. I encountered one in RC today. The listing is safe, of course, but when someone clicks through, the site attempts to drop a virus onto the machine. Drew

Hi there, You've left a couple of messages on my talk page, it's nice to meet you. I do have some questions. I'm very new to wiki...I've always been hard core ODP. I'd love some help, and if you have a project for me to work on I'd be happy to help. Right now I'm stumbling around trying to get used to the software.

The most pressing question I have is what do we do about articles that need to be deleted? Sites come and go and it's quite frustrating to come across an article like http://www.aboutus.org/HomeDecorDirectory.com (for example) and there's nothing I can do to correct it. I'd hate to see link rot become a problem and it drives me nuts to leave these pages up that lead to dead sites.

If we set aside the bot issue for a moment and just look at the manual process (maybe after the bot is finished, for fix errors in either direction), this seems to work: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Import - it says that any user can "export" and only admins can "import." page shows up with a thousand Domain names instead of contact info. I want some of my private info removed from your site, was shocked it was on a wiki, and registered to do so. I am having huge spam problems, this site might be contriubting to it.

Your showing of private info might be why someone decided to hack you.

So what if other sites do it. Doesn't mean you should too without owners permission, unless you do mean harm. these spammers are email terrorists. get worse everyday. Any site that helps them are terrorists too.

Normally I am a fanatic skype/irc/yim/aim/msn guy. But I currently work at a large $3trillion dollar swiss bank. This allows for 2 things, access to almost every kind of information I would ever want to know about companies, and no access whatsoever to communications outside of telephone and email. (ie. no instant messaging )

I have been using IRC since 1990, before it was a web client, but alas, today I cannot. At least not from work. Any other ideas?

Alternatively we can do it later tonight or tomorrow night. I am really upset that i can't get out there today.

Hello Mark. Last year as you know, I posted a declaration on the 'askemilyss.com' page protesting that it was a fraud. I had just been able to recover enough after I almost died in a fire which destroyed everything I owned including my non-profit orgination and its files. When I was able I went looking to find the whole fronteer of the internet had changed and my sites were gone from my control and ownership. I was still ill and overwhelmed and powerless so I went back to bed. I now am better and have researched what happened, want to say that the 'askemilyss.com' site and its parent site, 'UFPF.org' were both sold while I was hospitalized but the purchasers did nothing illegal and I have taken steps to deal with those who are responsible. AboutUs.org is not responsible.

I have registered 'Ask Emilyss Online Magazine' now as 'AskEmilyss.org', which it should be anyway since it is charity and not comerce and have regained ownership of UFPH. I am rebuilding now and will simply let those who are using 'askemilyss.com' to sell their products know that I am back and it will be their decision to determine whether or not they wish to be viewed as companies who will use a well-know charity organization's name for thier own profit just because they can - even when the charity organization is operating and *giving* to those in need of its services as before. That is the kind of thing that gets me motivated... I remember one drug company one time who that stopped funding me because I refused to be a sales-rep-by-proxy for them in my sites.... Idea from our phone call, wasn't sure where to note it. Featured sites + otherwise noteworthy community portal updates bookmarked either by a special aboutus user (del.icio.us/aboutus) or just with some structured tagging (del.icio.us/tag/aboutuswiki (?))

If you use a software posting tool for del.icio.us such as Pukka, it is super easy to tag pages using multiple accounts.

Hi, Mark. Re the history section at TimeLord; it seems to have settled, though the whole situation felt a bit like an ego-fest and not very promising for future history sections.

It seems strange not to put the Westlake Films reference in the related domains rather than the main text as, looking at the Wayback Machine there was little at the former TL site that can be found on the WF site. The other site mentioned doesn't have a domain name hence including the link separately. However, you have seen the editing back and forth. Also, the editor in question has not put a corresponding reference to TL on the WF site page; or at least he did and then removed it again shortly afterwards; he is the domain name owner for WF though so I'll leave that be. This comes back to the ego thing again though - the problem with history is one side will always want to come out of it looking better than the other lot rather than attempting some kind of objective overview.

After all this though, we're at the mercy of the domain owner turning up and saying they don't want the history section showing at all as it takes attention away from the current site :-/ But c'est la vie! Using Copyscape I have found that one of the users of your site www.ask-the-fishing-coach.com has directly copied two of my site pages without contacting me, or asking permission. I get no response to e-mails, but find that there is a link to this site which seems to be promoting this illegal behaviour.

I am extremely annoyed that this individual can claim this 

content as his own, as it has taken me many years to compile it. In fact, of course, the illegal content is out-of-date as it is a constant maintenance effort on my part. But the Search Engines regard mirrored sites rather negatively, so not only is this person infringing my copyright, he is also penalising my ranking on the Search Engines.

I am not sure of your relationship through this website with 

ask-the-fishing-coach.com but I am sure that it is not in your interest to condone or encourage this sort of activity. I would be grateful if you could at least keep yourself on the right side of the law and not act as a promoter for thid individual.

i.e. by editing existing facts and topics with those I insert. It appears that anyone can enter information into the about us pages, that, if unwatched, would be read and used by readers and understood to be factual.

That is what I mean.

I emailed Raymond King, and he says there is a function where interested parties (owners, etc.) could watch their page. But do you email the interested parties to inform them that an editable 'info' site is out in the open that discusses or describes their business or person?

Or are you editing all the listed sites once edited by external sources (like I edited your page, and you changed it back). That seems extremely time consuming...

Difficulty creating website pages with Australian domains

Hi. I wojuld like to create some pages for some Government and Education sites I manage. The auto-create tool doesn't seem to handle the domain names with four parts - eg www.sitename.nsw.edu.au or www.sitename.nsw.gov.au. Any ideas? If you want to check it and see, create a page for the site below ( I will edit the content once it is up). www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au

I also have a series of sub-domain sites that have the same problem - eg. amow.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au and k6.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au

I have a few web sites. I'm calling them brother sites. All releated to each other. I've gone on this kick of creating access to all standards. Also having each category with its own domain name. Right now its just a hobby. I figure it will stew for few years. Who knows it may become something big. I'm in no real rush to start advertizing but there may be some in a few years.

Right now I just hope these sites can become a staple in each of the categories.

Don't let me stop you from what you need to get done. It sounds like you're pretty busy. You also seem to be in touch with quite a few people, noticing all the other entries. I still have to update all my other domains description and contact info as requested. I'm hoping to finish that this weekend. I check out WikiAnatomy also. Looks like you're getting pretty far with that.

One suggestion I might make is if you request someone to add Title, description, address, and contact info you may have a sample page with just that. I found all I need from a few different articles. Now I'm using my first one that Kasey approved to complete the rest of mine.

Hi, I joined your site last night, but after going through steps to load my site, thinking the site would aid me in developing PHP ... I read something that said my site would now be for 'public use' once loaded, and that users could utilize it for whatever...? (See Below) By uploading or creating content here, you give us permission to use the content however and wherever we want as well.

I probably misunderstood that, but I tried to cancel out of the program and did not answer the email verification...my site is my business and do not wish for it to be for public use or for changes made. Can you verify that my site is now no longer available for your program? I was looking for help.

I am not a webmaster per say, but built my site on my own -- very tough, novice HTML... but need to add PHP login/register page, for customers to get into their accounts, and to secure my pages, etc. -- really cannot afford to hire anyone to do this for me right now...and need to find a PHP kit for free that works on my Yahoo account. Yahoo offers PHP MySQL but no Apache...any suggestions? Would appreciate any pointers?

Deleting then restoring seems to work just fine

I deleted the zip code 98115, created the preceding zip codes, then restored it. It seemed to work just fine, coming into the proper sequence. Yippee!

Change of URL

Hi Mark! My name is Carol and my domain name is CarolUnites.com. Unfortunately, I let the domain expire, registered through Network Solutions. (I know, not smart) and now I've tried to get it back...even pay for it, obviously I haven't offered enough. My question is way to retrieve a domain name I don't know about? Also, I do have a new name which is CarolUnitesArt.com and I would like to change my listing here to that if I can't retrieve my old one. This is driving me crazy because I have so many links going to CarolUnites.com!!!! Ahhh!! Thank you in advance for any help you can send my way. Carol

Hi Carol, this is an open edit wiki, so feel free to make any changes you want, I will place a note on the "old" one for now. Many people run into the problem that you describe because they are not familiar with how the domain name system works :-( - hope this works. Best, MarkDilley

Libelous content regarding Alterama, Inc.

I have contacted you previously about libelous information regarding my company Alterama, Inc that appears on AboutUs.org. I want any reference to Alterama, Inc. taken down immediately. There is a disgruntled former employee posting inaccurate and libelous information about my company on your site. I am to understand that this is an open "wiki" and that I should be able to edit the information posted. Since I am not able to change the information posted about my company, I assume that AboutUs.org is taking full responsibility for the content and therefore my only option is to take legal action against AboutUs.org.

Hi Teri, I am looking into it now. I see that the wiki page was protected for logged in people only becasue of "Continued vandalism." I have unprotected it and would encourage you to respond to it in a communicative form. We encourage people to try and understand the new internet as a converastion and that people are going to have a difficult time suppressing information, right or wrong, and that the best way to deal with it is in a response that shows you in a better light. Hello Mark, yes I do create in Photoshop constantly. It's not the only medium I use but certainly it's the easiest (there is no 'undo' button with my oils! LOL). This was a photo that was taken with a Canon 350 D, then taken into Pshop and gently massaged. ;-P

Eye candy: for my eye candy you have to travel deep into the bowels of the beast. Try going to the Visions section and head for Sigils and, if you want the deep background, try Sitework (more variety; sigils is a personal project that is ongoing and tends to follow certain rules of graphic presentation, whereas sitework is just approaches to graphic web design; everything under sitework was, at one time, a homepage).

And what mean, thinking in wiki? I have used Wikipedia (many times) but have never before actually participated in a wiki, it's definitely new to me. What's plural for wiki? wikii? wiki pronounced wik-eye? Hmmm. ;-P

I poked around the aboutus website a little, would love to take the tour with you. It'll have to wait til next week because of complications with my phone - but if you want I can instant message through gmail, and that might feel more natural to me. I hate trying to hold my cellphone to my head and type at the same time. (note to self: you really need to buy a handsfree!)

Here's what I grok so far: the concept of wiki encourages community ownership and participation. Very democratic. I like it. I can see how there will be moments when people make things difficult (I have run a few community based websites in my day - they were my life at the time) but there are people on board who know how to handle it, apparently. I think the idea of wiki, the effective use of it, requires maturity from the participants. It's not myspace. Thankfully.

I'm really looking forward to learning more!

Good-aye Mark, thanks very much for in no way 'jumping on me for all my black and white with lack of links'. I am very glad I became convinced to sign-up on my way to find an anonymous way to claim ownership of a certain IP address with one of the caretakers I felt certain to find by going to the root of the page I just had to fiddle with upon sighting.

Looking at contributions to this wiki in general I feel quite welcomed simply not to be told off for just blundering on in. I am completely new to wiki but have at least some understanding of causing action through commands, your edits make it obvious that you are very wiki indeed.

Your suggestions accompanied by the ability to immediately implement almost all (is it actually all and I missed something) of them through the 'command-linked hypertext' you use in your extension of greeting to me is very cool. I would love to have your guidance and assistance in learning more about wiki as I think that a well monitored wiki like AboutUS.org is simply absolutely priceless, what a service to a global community!

If I find a donations/contribute money link I will click it, only meagre-ish circumstances right now, but I'm left with money I would put into this wiki. More likely just enough to keep the electricity to run the server for a day, rather than buy a new server machine, but I know how little drops can make a puddle.

I'm up to my armpits with stuff to do, I'm going to disregard other things I want done till I have something I'm willing for the world to associate with 'robsoles' visible at http://robsoles.getmyip.com till I can get something like www.(Can't say here now, will edit in actual preference once I know it's status for sure).net, I have to take some pictures and try to become pleased with how I'm laying them out for the world to see with appropriate text within the next week!

I've a wireless machine running http:80 and "own chatserver":2000 services to my LAN, only the chatserver is exposed at my gateway to the internet. The current HTML is very personal/family oriented and will be shifted to hidden for the site I will expose. I can prove the chatserver is there, and mine in every sense of the word, by sending you the client and registering you on my server, so don't tempt me (unless you mean it...). This machine is in an enclosure outside of our house and what we call the enclosure is what I hope to get the final url to reflect.

just in case you want to tempt me or something silly like that, I'll give you the address of my 'outlook' inbox if you send something to my hotmail. I always send using my outlook address when I recognise the email address (or am just sure of sender regardless address) that I recieve mail from that comes to my hotmail.

Think I'll go claim the spot for Robert David Thompson instead of Robert Thompson, I've had run ins with two other fellows named Robert Thompson and a near run in on another who could have been either of the other two. I like real people, I won't take their potential spots should they happen along...

Hey Mark, I think I should scrutinize the help better than I have immediate time to. I don't think the incident merits chasing through the history, but if you insist at all, I'll do it. I went and read DeleteTest and the contents made me sure I need to study the help already on display before I go asking questions of people about stuff that is usually so well explained in help entries I've checked out. I consulted a mate on constructing a decent website and he is helping me integrate what I do in VB60 into ASP as he insists I should come out with own personal best result in terms of a website this way.

Redirects?

Did we not just discuss this in the office and say we weren't going to do this? Is it not extremely confusing if you were looking up your domain and it put you on VenusTV? Click on your AboutUs wiki page link from DomainTools.com and it takes you to a wiki page about VenusTV? Confusing and spammy. ScottKeeler | :::talk:::

Scott, we talked specifically about redirecting the body of ParkingLots to a single parking lot page. That is much different that redirecting a hosting companies page, which is identical to all its others, back to the hosting company. I have reverted your reverts of mine, because I have a system that I am working through. I will not work on it until we get a chance to discuss. MarkDilley

I was confuse only because I haven't come across a page which explicitly states that we are not going to host any illegal content such as ......

Hey Mark, I tried to populate a page named RCMazeracer but it somehow landed here. I don't want people to see 'robsoles.getmyip.com' as my site's URL for too long at all. I'm sure it's all easy enough for someone who has practised this stuff to fix. Catch you, any which way, robsoles is Rob Thompson.

If you don't mind me jumping in, it doesn't look like "RCMazeracer" is a fully qualified domain name (which is why the page was moved). There needs to be a .com, .net, .org or similar at the end.
