09-14-06 Modifying Domain template

Hello Ray, I tried to install a counter on my domain page first on the bottom of the body and then in the sidebar on the right, but nothing worked. You can still see the 'script =' html string that I added underneath the 'map =' line. The counter runs on java, with an external link to the source, take a look on my 'edit' page in the {{ }}. -- Either I wrote the code wrong, or you (your techies) would have to modify the Domain Page Template to allow dynamic external applications to run on the page. Disambiguation pages

Hi Ray: how do I create a disambiguation page? I am thinking here about geographic location names such as "Crofton", "Hill Head" and the ubiquitous "Springfield" of Simpson's fame. How do you see that side of the site developing? ... am I putting effort in the totally wrong direction? Regards, Robert.

you can just create a page such as Crofton and then link subpages such as Crofton - something to it.

You're on the right track, although the site currently contains mostly website articles, over time I'd love to see people create pages around those pages, such as disambiguation pages, terms that are uses by multiple sites, category pages that direct users interested in a certain area, etc. If you're interested I could really use some help with welcoming new users and helping them along -- but only if that is of interest.

On disambuguation, I think my answer assumes that you were referring to a normal article. Crofton is a category page currently, so in that case, other articles with that category can be subcategorized so they show up in subcategories (see Table Tennis as an example. Also, we are currently trying to create some tools which help manipulate categories across multiple articles more easily. I will keep you posted on that.

AboutUs question

How would I go about removing a listing that was created without my consent? Simply deleting the html in the editor didn't stick (looks like it was restored by AboutUsBot.) Thanks kindly for your response.... - JB :)

Recommendation for Removal Procedures

Might I recommend honoring robots.txt (this may require the AboutUs bot being designated as a specific user-agent, if you haven't done so). If a site owner wants to be removed on the next crawl, he can simply add the appropriate entry to robots.txt. Furthermore, you may want to honor the META tags for robots in individual pages, in this case "noindex" and "nofollow" might apply for exclusion from AboutUs. --RKrause 03:55, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

Absolutely. In addition, obeying a meta robots tag for nocache/noarchive would help eliminate cached info as well as instructions to remove all history entries/references to the domain.

Categories

Hi, I noticed that the AboutUs-Bot reads out the meta-keywords-tag of webpages and adds these keywords as categories. E.g. one of my sites has the keyword 'p2p'. Because wikis don't like words starting with a lowercase letter the category is 'P2p'. Other sites have 'P2P' as meta-keywords-tag. Those sites are in the category 'P2P'. Hi Ray, I don't really understand this wiki 'AboutUsWeblog.org' which lists all the AboutUs "Featured Sites", yet the outbound link on that page's thumbnail goes to some commercial domain/page with tons of advertising links and a search box on top that does not work: that site I absolutely do not understand, much less its relationship to what you are doing HERE... The only connection seems to be that YOU own both domains. And now you are setting up this weird network of interlinking... Quite frankly, I am happy to have my domain indexed here at AboutUs, but I don't want to be "sold down the river" (so to speak) to all kinds of other 'sister-sites' that are blatantly commercial...

Licensing

We've been talking over at Wikipedia, and I've been directing some people here, and suggesting others do the same, especially when this seems to be the site they're really looking for, to write about their own website. (As you know, Wikipedia doesn't necessarily need or want an article on every domain on the internet; at AboutUs on the other hand, that's kind of the point.) I'm sorry. I thought I read that this is a for-profit business. Do you intend to make a profit? I don't mean to be difficult, and I'm happy to take this discussion to e-mail, but I'll have to think about the ethics of having a tiered worker system: those who profit materially and those who volunteer (and wind up serving management).

I do hope you'll respond. I might still be interested, albeit in a scaled-back way. I could focus on the not-for-profit causes (mostly women's issues) that I care tremendously about. I'm not much of a techie, but I do have an M.A.+ in English and a lot of editing experience.

I Wikipedia Editors - Reluctant to Include Article On AboutUs.org

I recently began a Wikiarticle on AboutUs.org. Without checking the Google search results or Alexa rankings, the article was scheduled for speedy deletion, now just deletion possibly. I was at one point accuse of self promotion! AboutUs.org is a GREAT idea.. and is the answer to all of the frustration with the hidous DMOZ "open directory" that really isn't! Most catagory editors are either too busy, or have an interest possibly of not including other listings. I have always wanted a DMOZ alternative because they just will not reply to ANY requests for years. This is what Wiki is to the old stale encylclopedia's of the past.

The only problem is the Wiki editors are reluctant to list AboutUs.org, not seeing it as relevant as they would DMOZ.. etc..

possible idea for sysop/admin

Ray, would the programmers be able to look into possibly a check box system for the recent change patrols? for example.. when there are say, 20 edits to a page, only the most recent really needs a patrol (because patrolling the others defeats the purpose, more changes may happen).. to clear the lsit easier.. a check box system to 'mark all checked as patroled' may be a nice time saver. Also.. with rollbacks.. perhaps when clicking 'rollback', a history type list can come up, and you choose which previous edit to rollback to rather than only the last (again, rollbacks dont always work if the edit previous was also spam or vandalism, etc..) I also suggested to Mark Dilley a program we can downlaod (simular to what wikipedia uses).. that lets you patrol, and has 'macro's. which are all the templates, summary's, etc.. in a neu, jsut click, and it places the appropriate edit reason ro whatever instead of having to manually type it in (or look up which one you use in a dozen open browser windows). Yes, we're working on a way to patrol groups of related edits and you're right, this would be a huge timesaver. Good suggestion on Rollback also, but that's not on the list currently. I do hate it when we roll back to a previously spammed page. Right now we just look at history and identify the last known good version, call that up and then hit save which works pretty well. Hey Ray,

Theoptouts I did were on the shortpages.. all 0k or 1k.. with nothing to revert back to. pages with no site resolving I basically deleted. I figured they were all old, and opting back in is simple enough. There were also some nonsense pages people made playing around, and will never go back to (weren't website pages..just one word pages with 'hi' on it or something silly like that.

it's amazing how clearing out some nonsense pages can speed up the site a bit too(less pages to search through, even if they are 0k pages.. less hits on the database)

Website Badge

Ray, There's a minor problem with the website badge coding. It all works, but.. when the server here goes into maintenance, or isn't accessable for whatever reason, which does happen to all servers from time to time, when the code is isnerted into a webpage, it will stall trying to access the javascript it's linking to. This causes the page, or section (if done in php with includes) not to load for several minutes where the code is placed. I've looked into possible fixes for this, and there really isn't one other than a plain html code, which can be generated for the site the code is placed on, or the webmaster wold jsut have to replace a default text with their own website url. The problem doesn't accur often, but when it does, on sites like mine with heavy traffic, complaints come in like a swarm. I kind of remedied it a bit on one of my larger sites by placing it in it's own php include, so only the button wont show if the server is unavailable, this way the rest of the page does laod, but most who are novices to it all won't know to do this, and wont follow detailed isntructions in case of the problem (they'll see a paragrraph and just skip the whole thing) Just thought you'd wanna know about it.. maybe we can think of something easier for most to use so we can get the button on some sites.

Another thing with the button.. with the popularity of myspace, and many using myspace pages (and other blog type sites) as homepages (and getting tons of traffic), an alternate code for a myspace may come in handy (it wont accept scripts), and maybe an asy way to add myspace sub-domains to the wiki. It's only a matter of time before we start getting alot of blank myspace pages created by people who never saw a wiki before. Myspace is also great advertising for aboutus.org. I think it would really depend on how much work we want on our part.. having alternatives, and how to's for differant types of sites is really the easy part, getting peopel to read it is the hard part. The button does work great, the problem lies with various types of website coding, and how it resolves a url, and how long the server is set for before it gives up trying (and on free and shared hosting, you can't go in and change that on the server) We have enough trouble trying to get people to read the help files around here..which is another suggestion.. maybe a link under toolbox for OPTOUT.. since people miss it and blank pages alot making us guess what's going on. Blank pages do look really cheesy on a site trying for quality. perhaps an auto-template that can be inserted into a blanked page.. i'm not sure how easy it would be to automate it (could do that with the welcome template on new registrations as well). sorry, hahaha.. i'm on a brainstorm.. Alexa (the search engine) has a free toolbar thing (simular to goole or yahoo toolbar), but, with this one, you can put your own littl elogo button on it that links to your site, and it's totally free. Could be a nice tool to draw up traffic and advertise with. It works with all browsers, has a built in popup blocker that not all browsers ahve built in, even keeps track of your alexa rankings without the user knowing it. you can check stats at alexa's site. It can also be associates with an amazon.com affiliate account (without anyone knowing it).. so when it's used, and someone goes to amazon.com and makes any purchase, you get a commision from the purchase, without having to had amazon ads on the site. just a thought, people like when they think your offering something special for free. Subdomains with a problem

Hi Ray, I tried to create the subdomain page for a wiki I manage at Wikia costieraamalfitana.wikia.com and about us does not find that domain. 1. When replying on the public pages, [2], if you could consider putting your response in italics, it helps me make sure that we are responding to everything. I do a quick scan of the page to look for holes. I use the italics to help identify answered queries.

Neds mailto link w/graphic

Your home page talks about Neds.com and their use of a mailto link with the image of their email address. that produces HTML code which appears to defeat the purpose of hiding the email address! View source on their aboutus page and you will see what I mean.

The old Zeal database

Please consider purchasing the old Zeal.com database of web sites from Looksmart so that you could use the brief Zeal reviews to expand or create hundreds of thousands of AboutUs pages. I would recommend adding the description part of any imported Zeal listing in a new section of the appropriate AboutUs page, perhaps titled "Review by an editor", so as to avoid overwriting the existing description section, and using AboutUsBot to more fully populate any page derived from the Zeal database which was not already present in AboutUs. As you probably know, Zeal was a user-edited directory which was acquired and later closed by Looksmart. Zeal also developed a separate database of French-language web sites which might also be worth purchasing.

Since Zeal was closed in March 2006, all the listings are at least a year old. Many are for individual pages rather than domains. Nonetheless, a great deal of staff and volunteer time went into creating all these entries and, even after allowing for the fact that many of the URLs in Zeal no longer work, the database could be of considerable value to AboutUs. And since Looksmart has written off its investment in Zeal, you might be able to acquire the database fairly cheaply.

As well, the current AboutUs category structure isn't ideal. If you were to adopt the Zeal category structure, users would probably be able to locate the information they need more easily.

My take: We have policies which cover just about anything. If you have a problem with the site, talk to us, that's we're here for, instead of writing an entirely-too-long essay on why AboutUs is not to be trusted. Wikipedia is not be trusted. Don't put us in the same category as Wikipedia. If we don't have a policy on something and you think we should, talk to us, we might open a poll about that subject and policy would be created. That's how things work.

So to me, this is a non-issue. You have the same right as anyone to make complaints and suggest policy - now whether you take advantage of that right or merely moan and complain is up to you. In my opinion, if you don't actively take a part in the direction AboutUs is heading and actively make comments, complaints and suggestions, your opinion should count for absolutely nothing. "If you don't vote, you lose the right to complain". Without the community to help, AboutUs wouldn't be here today.

Your user Misha is the voice of your company apparently as you will not follow your own policies and have her removed from your site one can only assume she is in fact a member of staff and therefore expressing her voice as representative of the AboutUs.org website, This user has on numerous occasions breached the copyright violations that has been advised to your company many times, Also she has removed copyright notices and various other legal documents from our website description without our permission and when we put the text back she again deletes our comments including anything we may say in our defense against here bias and hateful remarks against us. If you have read the legal document provided to your company it clearly states that this users has in fact committed various hate crimes and we have reference them for you convince.

The only thing to do now as we have committed no illegal activities and have taken all reasonable efforts for our websites reference to be removed and to protect ourself from these hate crimes and also copyright violation from users using numerous libelous remarks the only thing is for legal proceeding to take place against your company to follow the polices that are clearly stated on your website that have most certainly NOT been followed.

Certain parts of our website are for-profit and have been delayed greatly on release because of your websites activities and the ongoing costs of the high-end servers and other administrative costs including but not limited to any loss of earnings resulting from inability to generate profit from the enormous marketplace that this industry has shall be brought into question.

It is your right to take legal action if you need to, but that would be a shame given that I believe we all share the common ground of wanting children to be safe from physical or mental abuse and exploitation. Here are some thoughts:

• On free speech - I think people should be allowed to express their views on our site so long as its done constructively. With regard to this debate, there are comments which I believe are either personal attacks or non-constructive and as such I have removed what I can find.

• Intellectual Property - Some or all of what was posted may be fair use, but to be sure that we are respectful of intellectual property rights I have removed anything I could find that looked like it was copied from the ArtSapience.com site. If I have missed anything, please let me know.

Ray, Misha has made more direct libelous statements about my person, last time she stated I was molesting my children which is both disgusting and highly offensive and now she clearly states that I have intentions of having sexual relations with my children, How is this appropriate behavior on a public forum Ray? Art, I'm happy to spend more time on this, as I did a couple of weeks ago when you asked me to. I will repeat (in summary) the guidelines that feel appropriate to me:

It has been difficult to keep up with the comments that have appeared around your site and the overall topic area. I am also not trying to take a side; I would simply like your site properly presented, with some intelligent discourse so readers will be well informed and be able to form their own opinions. As I said before, we are not perfect, but I can tell you that as a company, we will try to stand by the above guidelines. I have seen your negative posts about AboutUs and they are painful, but while we are less than perfect, it's hard for me to say anything. He is not putting them in the related domains but in the desriptions and addtional info. Here is an example : Subdomains under awiki.org and wiki.gd are freely available through afraid.org's FreeDNS for use in hosting your own wikis. Uhm. I feel I have to jump in here. AboutUs does not use its own IRC server. I think you're confused with that small technical aspect. They use freenode (an IRC network - network, not a server, a network has many servers, one server is one machine) for IRC, which is public - and it should be public at that. I don't understand why it shouldn't be.

As for AboutUs staff having oper status (as in IRC operator?), that is simply not true. They have channel operator status. Freenode's staff have oper status and their own rules prevent interference in channels. What you're suggesting simply does not happen. You can either take my word for it (someone who has spent some time in #AboutUs) or not.

Also, phone numbers are not required. AboutUs staff use Skype almost all the time. I can vouch for the fact that any phone number told to Ray does not go to anyone else - he & Mark both have mine as well. Just trust me on this one. Nathan ^(talk) 11:27, 10 September 2007 (PDT)

Yes i am aware of the irc server.But many of the public networks(such as freenode,efnet,dalnet,undernet,quakenet,etc) are no longer safe to join,and they do not provide adequate security.I run a few irc servers my self,and i have contemplated hosting a room there,but i would have to either:

• Remove my security measures.
• Provide said measures to AboutUs staff.

Neither of which i feel would be productive or worth my time doing.Im not going to expose my users(not only users from artsapience but from other sites and projects i maintain) to the possible harassment from AboutUs staff (see [4] for more informtion)

About the last sentence, again I've spent a lot of time in the channel and I've only noticed staff use their chanop powers wrongly once (on me, actually, and it was resolved eventually). That's something they're not in the habit of doing. The Scott incident never should've happened (but to my understanding, all he did was throw his weight around - just words, he didn't kick or ban you, did he?), I think everyone can agree on that point

Please take my word for it. Staff don't abuse their chanop power. It'll never happen.

No they can't. Chanops see the cloak. That's all they see. Again, take my word for it, I've been using freenode for 2 years and I have my own channel there. When you cloak your IP, that's it, that's all anyone sees (unless you join a channel before identifying to NickServ, before your cloak is applied, then people see your IP/hostname - but that's users' faults for not identifying first). Really high ranking freenode admins might see your hostname but again, they can't interfere in the day-to-day workings of channels.

Alright, I've tried to explain before and I will do so again. Network services are NOT abusable by channel operators. EVER. It never happens. At all. Period. Channel operators are only operators of channels, not the network, not of users or anything else. However, IRC operators are trusted to help run the network and none of them are AboutUs staff. You have the two confused, DG.

I have been using IRC since 1995, which coincedentally is the first year I was online. I know exactly how IRC works - I help maintain an IRC server as part of my job. Just trust me that I'm telling the truth, alright? Channel operators absolutely cannot see through vhosts. Period. I'm not lying (I have no reason to do so) and I'm not wrong. Having used the Internet for 12 years, just assume I've picked up a few things during that time. When it comes to IRC, something that is part of my work, just assume I know what I'm talking about. The web posts you refer to are mostly earlier on when we first launched the site and we did take them seriously. At that time, we had not yet explained what we were doing nearly as well.

Im not sure if you know or not but there is a website called Wikipedia which already does everything you are attempting to do,but better,and they actually police things neutrally and are not biased to what one member says.

Whois information is widely available on many sites and therefore I don't see how this is an invasion of privacy. People who don't understand this sometimes complain but are generally happier after we not only remove their contact information and wipe out the history, but also explain how they can get a private registration which is really what they need if they don't want their whois record to be public. On libelous remarks, any site that allows user edits has the same issue; we do our best to patrol all of the edits on the site to keep inappropriate comments off. Wikipedia is run primarily by their community; they started way before us, and they have many of the same issues you refer to. No argument that it's a great site and a huge success, but that doesn't mean that we can't have our own site and with our own different focus.

Our site is a support group,we are not trying to achieve anything commercial or produce a publicly displayed(or sold) product.We do not take in public funding.

No we only pay staff to develop and run the site. If we paid active members, then they'd become staff and the next group of contributors would be active members, etc. It would be difficult to pay every contributor to the site.

The notice has been allowed by the domain owner and we have compromised on the wording after months of discussions we resolved this matter. However you continue to change what was agree on, the words that were agree to have been altered numerous times simply because the page was not locked as I request, it has however been locked numerous times upon request for other users I might add.

I frankly don't remember what was agreed to, because I don't really see that the word "report" vs. "feel" and "may" is that different. Feel free to point me to the text, however.

The AboutUs.org website clearly states according to the statement the staff insist on reverting to on our domains reference that you have in your possession a report on the current contents of the ArtSapience website, If you do have this report as the owner of the website in question I formally request a copy of this document that has been conducted without my consent and is clearly in breach of the Terms Of Use that all persons accessing our facilities agree to, An extract from TOU at ArtSapience.com/tou.htm "I agree to these Terms and Conditions and I agree that they shall be legally binding upon me if I continue to use any part of Art Sapience" This includes all aspects of the conditions clearly advised on every section of the website. Also any person that wishes to access the forums section of our sites is required to be manually accepted and therefore screened and we have had no requests to perform any such content reports from your company so we can only assume that your site is then making statements about our website without any factual evidence and this being the case any such statement cannot be taken as the truth and thus makes the statement untruthful and furthermore means AboutUs.org is forcefully making a slanderous/libelous statement that is continuously being reverted to by the staff of this site and also allowed other users making these unfounded aligations against the ArtSapience website.

I think the confusion is the word "report". The way I read the sentence it is like "So and so reports that the weather is hot in Arizona today", vs. "So and so has a report that say X". I have not looked at your forum, and I have not seen any "report".

We had come to an agreement and I think you have worked out that we are no going to go away until the agreement that was made is kept, We do NOT have any illegal content on our website and we have discussed this with your website for what has turned into months now, previous version of a website do not pertain to an accurate reference of one, Just as your current work duties do not match exactly with your last job and it would be untruthful to describe your current activities by your last positions duties would it not, this is the case with our website and we have made enormous changes to the website and that of the business plan as it moves closer to the next stage of our project.

If your site is different now than it was before, that's great. If you want, I'd be happy to take a look and put up a more current comment.

I told you on day one what would happen and then at a checkpoint of I think 3 weeks and again now... You keep going in circles and wasting everyones time, If this continues I may have to start charging my hourly rate of $145ph as I am effectively sub contracted out to the Art Sapience under the Agency and this should not be funded by the tax payer and should be funded by the person resisting the progress of this Assignment namely the AboutUs.org website. (We are into hundreds of hours wasted discussing the facilities of the art sapience operation)

We have made such progress in relations it would be such a shame for it to fall back to the beginning and go through this all again. If this notice cannot be negotiated then removal of the domain and all references to Art Sapience name shall be required from your servers. (in writing to your atourney if this is required Ray)

It would appear we need to start another editing war on this website in regards the ArtSapience.com reference? If anybody was to visit the site in question they will easily find the legal truth. The information that keeps being removed that accurately describes the artsapience.com website is below for your reference, The user Misha (Who should have been banned from your website from numerous breaches of your site polices) is now making false allegations about my person (She has made numerous libelous remarks stating rather clearly that I wish to perform some sexual acts upon my children and this is clearly NOT the legal case and I take great offense to these allegations from your website) Your website is distributing links to libelous statements about my domain and my person.
