For people in the AboutUs community to share information.

Welcome to the Daily Buzz, the logbook for this wiki. Use this as a general place for members of the active AboutUs community to share conversation about what's happening here at AboutUs. If you're looking for a place to make suggestions, comments, ask questions, go to the ContactUs page.

What defines "community"? Well, if you're here then you're part of the community; go ahead and share your thoughts. It would be great if you created an account, and here are 5 Great Reasons to Make a Personal Page.

Please add items that are interesting and fun, but not AboutUs or Wiki related to DailyFun!

  • When I put lists of links to organisations online I often worry that I am only offering one point of view about that organisation. It would be great if AboutUs had a small but easily readable icon then people could visit the AboutUs page by clicking on the small logo. I know that a small icon appears in the address bar but this is not quite what I had in mind.

  • The Consensus Polling Tour could use some help. If you're interested, please visit Portal:ConsensusPolls and click on the first page of the tour (left column). If you see changes to be made, please go ahead and make them, or create a discussion section on the page itself, or use Projects:ConsensusPollTour. Thanks! TedErnst, Obed Suhail and MartinPfahler
  • Check out the way this wiki system introduces themselves via a [[1]] - the simple graphic on the first page about how pages get created is interesting as well. ~~ MarkDilley

  • WikiVille.org.uk is closing its doors, it looks like it lost the fight against wiki spam bots. This is one of the reasons I am excited about our wiki AboutUs. We have lots of people here to revert test edits and we have a technology staff to fight spam robots. ~~ MarkDilley
  • Had a great conversation with Howard Rheingold this morning, introduced him to AboutUs and other things I care about. ~~ MarkDilley
  • WikiYou.com impressively joins the wiki evolution. WikiYou is the unauthorized biography of every person on earth. It allows everyone to openly and freely write about each other, and records the stories of their lives. ~~ MarkDilley
  • Heads up to Brandon Sanders and other AboutUs Techies. Might want to get hold of the “Scientific American” August 2007 issue and read the “Data Center in a Box” article on page 90. This has relevance to radically reducing aboutus infrastructure cost. Sun Microsystem’s gurus (previously with super computer “Thinking Machines Inc”) have enabled massive “cheap” computing power delivered to anyone’s doorstep inside a 20 foot shipping container. the article also mentions its application to social networking, cloud computing, etc. Sun claims it can provide an operational turnkey system for one-hundredth the cost of building traditional data centers. Found the online article link: Scientific America article

  • Here is a great article about current Wikipedia culture, by Andrew Lih. MarkDilley
  • Suggestion -- we separate this page into two pages:
    • DailyBuzz for AboutUs and Wiki Related news and items of interest
    • DailyFun for stuff that anyone has found which is just fun
The idea would be to make the DailyBuzz page more valuable and at the same time keep the fun stuff for those with extra time, but put it somewhere else. Does that work for everyone? - Ray | talk

--Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby
For the third year in a row, I write to remind us of what I call Daisy Buchanan Day. Let’s see if we can stop for a moment today so that we don’t miss it. Take care and stay free, they write. Good sentiments. ~~ MarkDilley

    • Wiki-blogging is an issue that has been with me since this whole crazy wiki trip began, or nearly. After many months of not being able to describe wiki in a way that people understood, I turned to the weblogs. Weblogs are good because they are a one to many communication. That is pretty counter to wiki, unless you are trying to do what Brian Kerr describes in his weblog post (that was posted here on Friday, 08-Jun-2007). Window dressing. DeveloperTesting.com posts about this and it looks as if Alistar Cockburn.us [5] is getting traction with the whole wiki weblog idea. His is a MediaWiki and it the form looks and feels good. I will be watching it. ~~ MarkDilley

    • Heya'll. I've added a slightly modified famfamfam icon for use in signatures. In your Preferences, under UserProfile -> NickName add the following:
      - [[YourName]] {{SUBST: Clickpic|User_talk:YourName|http://images.aboutus.org/images/1/1a/Comment_green.gif}}
Make sure to mark the Raw signatures (without automatic link) box. In the end, when you're done and want to sign off, the three tildes (~~~) will show something like this - Vinh Nguyen Comment_green.gif Also make sure you replace "YourName" with your AboutUs user name.
      • The downside of this, of course, is the lengthy bit of text added to the page. If only image links were easier! In fact, I really have a problem with the lengthy text now. I'd say, don't use it yet.

    • Am wanting to re-gather support for the FeatureMePotentials list, which lists pages that have been nominated to be featured WikiPages. Generally, I'm leaving notes for improvements and encouragement on each nominated page and would love it if others would check in every once in a while and provide their own thoughts (so it's doesn't seem like it's just all coming from me). I'm trying to get the list caught up, so now's a great time to weigh-in on pages you like. -- TakKendrick

    • I'm highly guessing #1, Aboutus.org dosen't usually pick up the domain after 3 days of it being up. Google became a domain registrar about 6-8 months ago so they could have access to the registration logs. --Simon | talk 10:42, 1 June 2007 (PDT)

    • Tip of the hat to Scott for this video series of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates at AllThingsD.com. I would like to draw particular attention to the comment of Steve Jobs late in the last video, the Q and A session, where he talks about Apple.com stores One On One training. They started a year ago and have done a million one hour trainings. This is very exciting and telling to the kind of work I believe we need to do here at AboutUs. MarkDilley
