Title

XMacL: XML for Mac users

Description

XMacL (Eks'-Mac-El') offers XML news and resource links for Mac users. While the promise of XML (eXtensible Markup Language) as a tool for information exchange among computing platforms and software applications is increasingly being realized, XML support in software for the Macintosh has been limited in contrast to that for some other operating systems. As compared to the state of things when XMacL began, this is changing for the better with the advent of Mac OS X; but there still is lag or offset (pick your temporal or spatial metaphor of choice) in some areas, as seen in platform-dependent levels of XML support in web browsers.

When XMacL was founded, what little online information there was about using XML on Macs was scattered across sites focused more generally on either the Macintosh or XML, or more narrowly on an individual vendor's applications. This site offers a more efficient means of finding such information. XMacL sifts the web for resources located at the intersection of XML and the Mac OS, reports on XML-friendly Mac software, and gathers news and links from other Mac, XML, and vendor sites. I welcome suggestions about resources I've missed.

Along with offering a portal to extant resources, XMacL includes a weblog noting new, newly updated, or newly found resources. In the future, it also will be a content source and more real-time portal to other content via RSS feeds (yet to be implemented). Because the pace of weblog entries depends on the appearance (or my discovery) of resources, the frequency of updates varies in response to flurries and lulls of relevant activity on the web (and to my own limited time; as a one-person voluntary service, sometimes XMacL is a low-priority project for weeks at a stretch). This varied pace is driven in part by vendor announcements at such trade shows as MacWorld Expo and Seybold, as well as by occasional bursts of grassroots activity. Older weblog entries move to archive pages, where they may still be of interest even as their news and resource links become outdated.
