The changing of the cars
Much has happened since October, but instead of diving back in with a list of highlights, I’ll wade in gingerly with a recent event: The sale of my car. Many know my 1991 red cavalier well. It is the only car I’ve ever owned. My mother gave it to me in 1996 when I was a sophomore in college. Then it had 65,000 miles on it. I added another 100,000 miles over the next 10 years. Every woman I’ve ever seriously dated knows this car. It hauled me back and forth between Worthington and the Twin Cities for two summers, provided safe passage to Amherst, Massachusetts in 1999 (even though it was weighted down with four milk cartons worth of books, all my clothes, a stereo, lamp, CDs, files and ephemera) and helped me move a friend from Manhattan to Brooklyn one busy Sunday afternoon. I’ve replaced the battery three times, the spark plugs and wires twice; I had the front end replaced after a fender-bender, the rocker panels custom made after they rusted, the windshield replaced twice, countless sets of new tires, new brakes, and new struts installed, and at least four different mufflers put on. On Saturday the catalytic converter rusted off. It hit the ground with a thud and was followed by the ghastly, environmentally unfriendly roar of forced hot air when it bypasses the sound-neutralzing muffler for a convenient, quick, loud escape. I drove it home and parked it in the driveway. So this was it: the first big repair after I promised myself I wouldn’t spend any more money on the car. On Sunday I tied the front and rear exhaust piping back on the vehicle and attached the catalytic converter back on with duct tape. At 16.00 I placed an advertisement on Craig’s List. Here it is:
