The University of Minnesota (UM) is Minnesota’s primary research university, one of the most comprehensive public universities in America and a state land-grant university. It is founded in 1851.

With campuses at Twin Cities, Duluth, Morris, Crookston and a collaborative center in Rochester, the UM offers the widest array educational opportunities, in more than 370 fields of study. With 4,349 acres in all, the UM has more than 800 buildings in them.

University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) is ranked as one of the top five public liberal arts colleges in America in 2006.
The University of Minnesota, Rochester (UMR) offers UGto PhD programs to the special needs of SE Minnesota.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) with an accent on technology, is internationally famed as the original laptop University.
The University also has many experiment and extension services throughout the state.
UM’s Institute of Technology alone, raised graduates who have created $46 billion worth of 2,600 active companies and employing about 175,000 people.

Odds and Ends
The University's Initiative for Renewable Energy and the Environment (IREE) made it leaders in Renewable Energy Research.
The University has received 221 patents in the past five years and helped establish more than 24 start-ups. UM is one of the biggest recipient of federal research grants and conducts 98 percent of all sponsored academic research in Minnesota.
UM’s students have of more than 220 study, work, and internship programs in 60 countries worldwide.
Students' satisfaction at 94 % is high or very high in regular student surveys.
UM also has an international student body of 3,875 from 130 countries.

The Annual student body strength of UM stands at around 64,000. the break up of various minority groups is as follows in Fall, 2005.

The UM awards some 12,000 degrees annually and typically 10% of them are in engineering and nearly 40 % of the Twin Cities campus degrees were graduate and first professional degrees.
Faculty
The rich faculty of UM has more than 3800 memebers of both tenured and tenure-tracked by 2005.
History
- The UM was founded in 1851, as a preparatory school.
- It reopened in1867, after Civil War induced closure, as Minnesota's land-grant university.
- In 1873, two students received the first bachelor of arts degrees.
- In 1888, the first doctor of philosophy degree was awarded.
- The Duluth, Morris and Crookston Campuses joined the University in 1947, 1960 and 1966 respectively.
Housing
Extensive and economical housing is available for students in UM at Middlebrook, Pioneer / Comstock, Centennial, Pioneer, Bailey etc. Besides apartment type accommodation is also available at University Village, Roy Wilkins Hall and Yudof Halls.
Libraries
University of Minnesota libraries is a system of libraries in Crookston, Duluth, Morris, and Twin Cities campuses. With 6.2 million print volumes, nearly 37,000 serial subscriptions, 6.3 million microforms, 2.65 million government documents, and 423,000 maps, it is the 16th largest research library in North America. Search for materials such as books, journals and conference proceedings on the official website.
Athletics
UM has 11 women's and 11 men's teams in the Big Ten events. The infrastructure include, Williams Arena, Sports Pavilion, Mariucci Hockey Arena, Ridder Arena, Aquatic Center among many others.
Baseball, basketball, cross country, football, women's soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyballetc., are major fields for intercollegiate athletics at the University of Minnesota.
Health Providers and Resources
Comprehensive health care is provided by UM together with University Physicians, Health Care Center, Medical Center, Fairview, etc., to create and maintain a healthy community in university.
Outreach and Public Service of UM Extends, applies and exchanges knowledge with society using its expertise to community problems, changing social environments, and by making the knowledge accessible to the citizens of the state, and the nation as well as the world.
A wide variety of public service programs—from dental, medical, and veterinary medicine clinics to K-12 outreach—help more than one million people annually.
