The DailyBuzz has been fun for many of us. It was AboutUs updates about our great community website and wiki, but [http://blog.aboutus.org our blog] basically took this over. DailyBuzz fell inactive and now it is time for her to retire. Thank you for supporting [[AboutUs]] and for being eager to read our community news. <center><big>For new updates and information about [[AboutUs]] visit [http://blog.aboutus.org our blog]</big> (or [http://www.twitter.com/AboutUs follow us on Twitter]).</center>
Welcome to the '''Daily Buzz'''.

</div>
This page operates under the theory that "A [[wiki]], like a ship, or other transportation mode, needs a log of activities." Use this as a general place for members of the active [[AboutUs]] community to share conversation and just say, "Hey I saw this thing, and I think the AboutUs community would get a kick out of it." If you're looking for a places to  make suggestions, comments, ask questions, go to the [[ContactUs]] page.

What defines "community"? Well, if you're here then you're part of the community. If you already have a log-in, go ahead and share your thoughts. It would be great if you '''[[LogIn|created an account]]'''.

* If you have a specific idea, try adding it here [[Features and Fun]], [[Ease of Use]] and [[Function Brainstorming]]  There are standing pages for the community to collaborate and create running lists of ideas on.

We have moved much of our back and forth to [[Yammer.com]] - we like it and miss this public-ness at the same time. ~~ [[MarkDilley]]
* [[Template:malwaresite]] has been created as a tag for pages described below.  What do folks think?  [[SpySheriff.com]] has it placed on it.

* It's been a few weeks since I've logged in (my bad), and was surprised to see a really neat caricature of myself on my User page.  Too cool - looks better than the original [[User:Redlake6|Redlake6]]

:* Glad you like the caricature. Not sure which of our magic elves orchestrated that one, but credit for how it looks of course goes to Rhoda at [[DigitalPainting.com]]. :* [[User:Spacegeek4|Spacegeek4]], thanks for pointing these out. I think that the value of [[AboutUs]] is the fact that we have information on these sites so that users can know that these are malware and have a discussion about this. I note that both pages have "Community Reviews" attesting to this, but this information can be made ever more valuable by supplanting those reviews with the information and links you've provided here. I don't want to speak for the rest of the AboutUs community when I say this, but that's certainly what I'd do with these malware sites and other known "bad guys". I see [[AboutUs]] as potentially being a great resource when people are considering purchasing or downloading software (or other goods and services), and that the open edit format allows users to share first hand not just their advertising-slanted text, but real human concerns and experiences that might not be voiced on the so called "objective" websites. Sorry for the diatribe, but this is a soapbox I'm very fond off. -- [[TakKendrick]]

:*I aggree. It is a good idea to warn users about the "dark alleys" of the internet but the link on top of every page could be dangerous. According to Stop Badware's website guidelines (http://www.stopbadware.org/home/guidelines#website) a SINGLE link to an exploit site makes the linking site a "website that hosts or distrubutes badware" and a large amount of links to other badware sites also makes the site bad.Its a bit over protective but those are the guidelines.I'll rewrite the articles that I noted sometime.--[[User:Spacegeek4|Spacegeek4]] 20:58, 11 April 2007 (PDT)

:*We don't have an easy way currently, but it would be good have a "no links" option for these types of sites -- [[RayKing]]

** It's also happening to a lesser extent in Firefox on a Mac (gasp!). * I started playing around with a more personalized signature. <nowiki>{{TakTalk}}</nowiki> if you're interested. I then just sign things <nowiki>{{subst:TakTalk}}</nowiki> and it does all the magic, including the "talk" which actually calls the "adds a new comment section" to my talk page. Pretty slick. ** Switched to just signing it <nowiki>{{TakTalk}}</nowiki> because the SUBST added a bunch of code that could be intimidating. * Made a first attempt at the much-needed ([[IMHO]]) [[How to Create Subdomain Pages]], and have transcluded it into the [[How do I create a new article?]] page. If anyone has a better way of explaining how to create a new page to do the <nowiki>{{subst:Subdomain}}</nowiki> into, please edit away. * This is going to be an annoying side-effect of moving the search bar. I've already found a few "Help" topics that make note of using the search bar to the left (or worse, make note of the "add missing domain" box that was rolled into the search bar months ago). Anyway, I'm sure I only found a few places where this info needs to be updated. If you happen to be pawing through stuff and see references to the search bar to the left, please fix. *Should pages include sections on the history of a domain name? I'm thinking of sites that have had more than one site associated with a domain name over the past eight or nine years, and where the old site ceased to exist and a new site is currently operating from that domain name. Is this the sort of wiki for recording the history of domain names or is the preference to focus on detailing current sites? --[[User:Faye Dunaway's teeth|Faye Dunaway&#39;s teeth]] 12:49, 27 March 2007 (PDT)

** I don't know what every else thinks, but I certainly think this [[WikiWiki|wiki]] is a great place for this information. I don't think it should be autogenerated or even required, but if you know a bit about the history of a particular domain, it's not a bad idea to have it up in it's own section on that domain's wiki page. -- [[TakKendrick]]

*** Yeah, I'd love to see this kind of information on wiki pages. :[[ScottKeeler]] | <small>[[User talk:ScottKeeler|talk]]</small>

****An example one I've been watching is [[TimeLord.co.uk]] which has such a history section. * After a month or two of hard work [[AboutUs]] has developed its first portal!    The [[Portal:LASIK|LASIK Portal]] began as an organizational experiment and quickly morphed into an exploration into, and demonstration of, the possibilities of the AboutUs wiki.  The initial idea was to synthesize encyclopedic information and commercial listings into a richly interlinked framework.  Building off of a generic portal concept, we set to work researching the [[LASIK]] procedure and building out pages on its [[Portal:LASIK/History|history]], [[Portal:LASIK/Surgery|the surgery ]] itself, [[Portal:LASIK/AfterSurgery|after care]], [[Portal:LASIK/Equipment|equipment]], etc.  Once these general informational sections were complete, we built out a location-specific segment of the portal for [[LASIK:Manhattan|Manhattan]] (sections for other cities are being built as we speak). To make our resource truly unique, we personally interviewed every available [[LASIK]] center in Manhattan to garnish as much information as humanly possible. After filling out individual profiles for each provider on their respective AboutUs pages, we migrated the information into a [[LASIK:Manhattan|comparative matrix]] for all [[LASIK]] centers in Manhattan.

:Now that we’ve accumulated what we believe to be a substantive resource, we’d like to open it to the community.  Come visit, read, and—most importantly—EDIT!  We’re going to continue to build out individual cities within the [[Portal:LASIK|LASIK Portal]], so we’ll keep you posted on that.  Ultimately, we hope that [[Portal:LASIK|LASIK]] can serve as an example on how to build out other portals.  Many other portals!
