Welcome to AboutUs.org!

Hello Steven, my name is Kristina and I'm across the room from you. Hey!

I'm excited that you've joined us for "Wiki Wednesday"! Welcome! Let me know if you have any questions along the way (I'd love to hear from you!) - please leave a message on my talk page via the "talk" link in my signature below. You may also join the AboutUs WebIRC to chat or ask a question, and below are some links that I have found helpful...

Welcome to the AboutUs community - it's great to have you!

We have various templates ({{ComingSoon}}, {{ParkingLot}}, {{ForSale}}, {{PossibleSpamSite}}, etc.) for this sort of thing. It's not a big issue really but it can add to the informativeness (is that a word?) of the DomainPage. KristinaWeis | **talk** 16:46, 4 October 2007 (PDT) (p.s. I used to work for the Clark paper as a copy editor back in the day.)

WikiMan232

User:WikiMan232 is an interesting one, for sure. I'm not sure exactly what to do with him. We are now a casespace insensitive wiki so WikiLink, wikilink and wiki Link all work, and go to the same page, so if he feels it's better to have a space, I don't necessarily see a problem, even with a less-than-friendly edit summary. On the other hand, if you see edits that are unconstructive, please feel free to keep doing what you've been doing, and undoing those edits. You might also want to use an edit summary that explains, like RevertTest or the like. A list of these that we have so far is here: Glossary. Hope this helps! peace, TedErnst | talk 21:46, 5 October 2007 (PDT)

Thanks for the note. Please see User_talk:Wikiman232#Blocked TedErnst (talk) 09:31, 20 November 2007 (PST)

Yay for WelcomingPeople

I was happy to see you joining the very elite club of welcomers! It's kind of my specialty/favorite thing to do, so let me know if you have any questions. WelcomingPeopleIdeas has a lot of, well, ideas on the topic. KristinaWeis | **talk** 02:56, 6 October 2007 (PDT)

I actually have a leaning towards non-template welcomes because I like to do what I can to personalize them. But um, Template:Welcome is the only template one that I know of. My personal one that I copy and paste from and tweak (which this template was largely borrowed from) resides at User:KristinaWeis/Welcome3 and most everyone else makes up their own shorter ones individually for each welcome they do. I'd recommend checking out how others are welcoming on WelcomingPeople Log (just tab out some of the TalkPages) and create your own variation that works for you. Cheers, KristinaWeis | **talk** 23:57, 6 October 2007 (PDT)
I need to dig up our conversation on this. We've tended not to simply drop {{Welcome}} on talk pages, instead going for a more personalized cut/paste version, where we put in the person's first name, if we have it, and a link to the DomainPage they've been editing. Wish I could remember where we discussed this. TedErnst | talk 08:57, 8 October 2007 (PDT)
I'm planning to make my own template, but I haven't had the time yet. Besides, I personally found all the links in the standard template helpful as a newbie, and I wanted to suss out what questions people were most likely to have and what I should add or remove to a template I made. Thanks for the helpful suggestions, Steven | talk
Sorry, I wasn't clear. Using {{subst:Welcome}} can work, because then when the new person edits their own page, they see all the wikitext, not the template. Know what I mean? TedErnst | talk 19:16, 8 October

2007 (PDT)

Oh! Yeah, I know what you mean. We have to subst all templates on WP too, but I forgot here. Thanks for the head's up! Steven | talk 10:58, 9 October 2007 (PDT)

Bot

The Development team has a couple of bots that are doing that right now, until they are totally finished those tasks, I have my bot doing other things. When they are done that, we can come up with some ideas to get the rest of the pages. --Simon | talk 17:20, 6 October 2007 (PDT)

wikipages

Glad you like that.

By the way, Ray got me interested in go last year, and I've been playing like crazy. I'm still pretty awful, but it's fun to see all your go links together and the Go Congress next summer. I'll have to see if I can be in Portland that week. TedErnst | talk 15:29, 7 October 2007 (PDT)

Hi

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out. Kasey 18:13, 7 October 2007 (PDT)

weird cross over

Hi Steven! Great to see you in full name mode :-) Just wanted to point you to a couple of ideas:

  1. WikiIndex.org and
  2. the weird talk page cross over we developed there, we actually use talk pages in the user namespace - well most of us do. Anyway, stuff to think about! :-) Best, MarkDilley
    1. also Steven, when welcoming, you might think about using {{subst:Welcome}} as it looks a little less mystical if they look at the edit page. Best, MarkDilley
  • ack! :-) I actually liked the weird cross over. I don't think it is nice to call people "users" :=) So if you want = please keep Steven Walling :-) sorry for being confusing! - short hand, I am a pain in the butt! :-) Best, MarkDilley

Category:Welcome to AboutUs!

Kasey came up with a great idea that I'm in love with for tracking new people that are welcomed as opposed to the old Welcoming People Log page. Essentially by month every new user welcome gets a category like Category:2007-10 Welcome to AboutUs! (as you have) so they can easily be tracked and sorted by year/month on Category:Welcome to AboutUs!. So you can see that I just added this to my deal-y at User:KristinaWeis/Welcome3 and if you could do the same to whatever you use and hopefully remember to change it on the first of the month. Cheers, KristinaWeis | **talk** 12:29, 16 October 2007 (PDT)

Ooh, "subst"-ing Template:Welcome is great! Would it be possible for you to add the category I mentioned above to your welcomes so we get "credit" for them, if you will. KristinaWeis | **talk** 16:05, 18 October 2007 (PDT)
I noticed your welcome page earlier today and that's all great and fine - probably easier to keep it there so you can make it your own. Will you be joining us in November (e.g. WikiWednesday)? KristinaWeis | **talk** 20:18, 23 October 2007 (PDT)
Haha, well... it is a very elite club of wiki enthusiasts and you know how exclusive those sort of people can be ;) (Translation: Yes, you're definitely still invited.)
  • Hi, Steven! I want to invite you to WikiWednesday tomorrow evening at the AboutUs offices @ 107 SE Washington Ave #520. Anytime after 530 or so; I know that BrandonCSSanders will be crafting plans for RecentChangesCamp 2008..not sure what others are planning to work on. Hope you can make it. WikiWednesday chatting

Hey, I feel like I'm IMing a classmate during class or something... haha. Tak is the FeatureMe guru and I'm guessing that these two haven't been "processed" yet. I'm taking a look at them now and will try to add some coherent feedback to the feature discussion. Telepathic high five, Kristina | **talk** 20:01, 7 November 2007 (PST)

Um, there's a WelcomingTool in the works for the dev team but I think it's been a low priority for a while. So I primarily I go off of Special:RecentChanges and go way back to look for any red talk links, and there is always the box on the homepage (although I'm not sure how useful it is). Redirect to Steven Walling

Hey Steven,

MarkDilley and I noticed that you had both User:Steven Walling and Steven Walling and that different people were making edits to one (but not the other), creating slightly different pages.

Anyway, we look at the differences and decided to create one "uber" page that was a combination of the two, and redirected User:Steven Walling to Steven Walling.

Naturally, if you prefer it the other way, go ahead and change it.

Best,

Tak
