The problem: After some initial frustration, I was able to get the out-of-box Civ4 version working on my laptop some several months ago and have been happy with bliss and happiness ever since. Until recently. I decided to install 3 things at once: BlueMarble gfx, some other BlueMarble related utility for jimmying object sizes and fonts, and the 1.61 patch. My first run after this showed me my mistake was heinous. Something had destroyed all the fonts! After uninstalling and reinstalling Civ4 w/o the patch, I tried to play and the thing locked up after a moment, at first showing signs of memory corruption glitchaliciousness, then the screen went solid white. Threads seemed to spin away in the background, but no dice on seeing the action.
I installed the patch again, same problem. I banged my head against the laptop for 6 more hours (so far), trying every combination of everything your mom would think to do, including system restore. But bubkiss. BUBBBBBKISSSS.
