- Biography
- Quillnews editor R. Thomas Collins has worked in journalism and public affairs for more than 30 years, as a reporter, lobbyist and oil industry manager. Collins has managed political and media operations, and written several books. As a young man, Collins worked as a photographer and in the theater. A graduate of Boston University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Collins worked as a reporter for newspapers in New England between 1969-73, before moving to New York, where he was a reporter, rewriteman and editor with the New York Daily News between 1974-79. Collins began reporting about the oil industry in '73 during the Arab Oil Embargo. In '79, in the midst of the Iranian Revolution he joined Mobil Oil, which had an active public affairs program to secure greater access to oil supplies at home and abroad, and to allow free market forces to flourish in global petroleum markets. Collins worked for Mobil Oil from 1979-96, and later for Australia's Broken Hill Proprietary Co., Ltd. as that company's representative in Washington, DC. During his career in the oil industry, Collins traveled extensively and worked on projects in most of the world's oil exploration and producing regions, particularly Nigeria, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam and Australia. Since retirement from oil industry affairs in 2002, Collins has concentrated on journalism and publishing ventures - participating in emerging media markets by utilizing technological advances in both print and online media platforms.
