New Iteration Tasks
Hi all, I put up the latest iteration tasks today. Nothing much has changed, we'll be finishing up VancouverTech this iteration or the next and focus will continue to grow on WikiCoaching and the ways Content can help support the writing for WikiCoaches via the Assist WikiCoaches with Content Writing task.
The only other change is largely semantic. I've renamed HighTraffic task to: Articles to Write. The list on here is now being aggregated from a variety of articles we need written, mostly the former HighTraffic lists. (Which also means you no longer need to look at the "what links here" for HighTraffic, as I've already fed these into the list.) With these articles, continue to write them at about the level of the HighTraffic or Tech articles, unless otherwise noted.

Content help for WikiCoaches
Hi all,
After a meeting today to discuss the successes and places for improvement in the WikiCoaching process, we wanted to tweak the model and workflow for WikiCoaching a bit. This should help us get more clients work done faster and better.
Under the new system, there the work will be divided into:
- WikiCoaches
- Article writing staff (as assigned through Mehr)
WikiCoaches can continue to help with article writing as they wish and those in the Content staff (Saliha, Mehr, Tak, Steven) are welcome to continue to coach in addition to doing the writing. (If you would like to be a WikiCoach, or would like to not under the new system, please let Tak and John know.)
If a WikiCoach requires help on an article, they will contact Mehr, who will then assign a content team member to help. The content team writer will be responsible for writing the article (that day if possible) and following up with the appropriate WikiCoach when the article is completed or if you need more information from the client.
With the new iteration coming up (Monday), the completion of SeattleTech (YEAH!), and the addition of a sales person to our team in Portland (who has already been generating new work and leads) there will be a few other shifts in the tasks over the next couple of days. We'll be letting everyone know about them as they happen.
Thanks for all the hard work, and (again) congrats and YEAH! on the finishing of SeattleTech. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me, Mehrunnisa or John.

VancouverTech Question
These two web pages are same in my opinion.... One which is in VancouverTech--http://pacificnorth.ca/i/ and the other http://www.pacificnorth.ca/home.htm, Please correct me if I am wrong...I will be creating the AboutUsWikiPage from the other as it contains full information of the former...Asma
- Yes, it looks like they are the same company, it's interesting how they're doing their URLs differently with the www. and without it. Anyway, it looks like in addition to those pages you pointed out, there's good information on http://pacificnorth.ca/i/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=15&Itemid=27 with sort of their background that might be helpful for the article. -- TakKendrick | talk

New Tasks and Tasks Page
Today I landed on the Content Task page, trying to get it cleaned up. There were some 80+ articles marked as tasks (many of which have been done for months) all at the bottom of the page. I discovered also that a few tasks had been proposed by others (Brandon, Vartan) months ago, but never got due consideration because they were so hard to find on the massive list.
So, to clean it up, I:
- Paired the Category:Content Task page down to only tasks that are in progress or newly created ones for us to plan out.
- All completed tasks (as well as the iteration plans for the last couple months) are now on Category:Content Task Done.
- Personal projects and tasks that weren't finished but have been put on indefinite hold I moved to Category:Content Task Hold so we could better track these "orphaned" tasks and consider them when we get time.
- I also added a category: Category:Content Task New which will auto-feed on new tasks created with the form. This will (hopefully) allow us to note when new tasks are generated by others. To help with the planning, I've put proposed tasks into a little box on the Category:Content Task page as well.

Removing Listings
Please stop taking items out of PortlandTech (ie. the category and badges). If you feel something doesn't belong in the category, then do some research as to why it was initially put in the category to begin with (and if you think it's in error, then let me know, but don't take it out). Quite frankly, I'm tired of things like BambooFunPenTablet.com being taken out when they obviously are in PortlandTech. (They make software for computer tablets and are in the Portland area, how can this not be in PortlandTech?) The frustrating thing is that I put a note in the history last time this happened on this page (yes, it's happened three times, and both previous times someone has left a note in the history on the revert). I'm getting 3 or 4 emails a week from various people in the PortlandTech community asking why their page was taken out of the listing and it's embarrassing because my only answer is, "Oops, I'm sorry, we goofed." -- Tak
- I'd also like to make a pitch for the content team to use a good EditSummary when making significant changes like putting a page into or out of a portal, or when it's status changes to done-done. See the EditSummary page for more info. This is an important wiki skill! TedErnst (talk)

- Ted, have you tried our PortlandTech/Suggestions page? Easily identifiable via our handy-dandy navigation on every PortlandTech page :) I'm watching this calendar initiative with gusto. Technically, PortlandTech is all but being handed over to Community (build out on article will stop Feb. 1, I think). The calendars are a snag we've got to discuss on the transition, because if they're just going to languish someone needs to be assigned them (right now it's StevenWalling). Nothing gets staler quicker than a calendar and if we want to keep PortlandTech lively, it's going to be a place we need consistent (if minor) effort each week. -- TakKendrick | talk

New Content Tasks are up
Hi all, I put up new Content Tasks for the iteration, mostly a lot of the same. The big change is that we're trying out using hours for our estimates to complete a task rather than pair days (something the Ops Team has been doing to some success) so we'll see how that works.
Tasks that have been completed (YEAH!):
- LASIK Maintenance (Jan. 1-15) -- Chris will be finishing up this this week before he departs us on his musical adventures (check your emails for this news)
- 3 New Offers dialogs, pdf, and other content as needed -- completed
- PortlandTech Outreach (Jan. 1-15) -- Chris finished this up and we're transitioning the outreach for PortlandTech over to the Community team now.
New tasks this iteration:
- PromoteMe: WikiCoaching (Jan. 16-31) -- The "Promote My Company" offer is up and several of us (Lahore and Portland) have signed up to be WikiCoaches
- Better World:Portal Structure (Jan. 16-31) -- John is working with someone to help build a structure for the Better World portal.
If anyone has any questions, post them here or let me know (talk page or email). -- TakKendrick | talk

Wednesday Report
Group Review by Mehr
I am finally back to work after a long break. This week we experimented with how to work on Portals.MUbin and Ayesha had already been paired up for LahoreTech.Starting Monday I suggested we self review articles, whereby Ayesha reviewed Mubin's articles and vice versa for Mubin.I felt that by working on the same page over and over again created a mind block, so by reviewing each others articles they filled in on what they thought was missing in the others page.I am happy to say by the end of the week more than 80 pages have been put in the Lahore Tech DoneDone list.Great work you two!!
Myself and Rohail intended to clean up the Category:PortlandTechNeedsWork which had around 80 pages by the end of this week. Some of them were not Tech related as by the new definition and were hence removed. Some of them were DoneDone and had not been removed from the list.Again this target was achieved and the Category:PortlandTechNeedsWork has zero pages on it now.Good work again by Rohail.Next week me and Rohail intend to move on to Category:PortlandTechNeedsReview and employ the strategy of Self Review used by Ayesha and Mubin on Lahore Tech. The goal is to have at least 50 more pages on the Portland Tech DoneDone list by next week.
Sanwal and Asma have been working on Seattle Tech.Around ten articles have been put in the DoneDone list and around 70 have been put up for needs review.
All in all it has been a good week.

General Discussion about Article Writing
Monday 7 January 2008
Ted and us had a little discussion regarding the number of articles to be completed perday as AboutUs envisions quick completion of projects. So, if 10 or 15 articles per day are to be completed, the quality of the articles would not be that attractive or constructive as compared to if we do 5-7 articles per day but if the stress is not over quality and is on the number of articles to be completed, we can always try to finish up with 10-11 perday...The question arises how do we measure the completion of an article? Should it contain a little profound information or only precise/up to the point?
- Thoughts/Suggestion..?Thankyou
- I think the goal should be right in-between those numbers (erroring on the side of better articles)... say 7 to 10 articles a day. Really the measurement of article completion isn't when they're moved to "NeedsReview" but by how many in a week are called "DoneDone". If one works on say 15 articles a day, that's 75 a week, but is only 55 of those are "DoneDone" then the next week you have to re-work those 20 remaining articles (further reducing the efficiency of the 15 a day you're doing); if initial quality were higher, to the extent where only 10 articles a day are completed (60 a week) but 55 of them are really "DoneDone," I'd say you've accomplished more simply because you have 10 less to have to rework the next week (and those 55 are probably better in this scenario). My only concern with this is that if the numbers of articles do go down (which I think is okay), the quality needs to go up. I'd rather take the quality up 10% over what we've been doing, we just can't have only 5-7 articles a day at the current quality levels. -- Tak

- If you want to see how exactly it's done, take a look at the dif history for my edits. But really, in a pinch the important thing is to add two category tags Category:PortlandTech and Category:PortlandTechInProgress (naturally, if it's a LahoreTech or SeattleTech, change the city name). These help make sure they're flagged for us to work on. Eventually, the 'Add This Here' Tool for Portals will be completed, which will make it much easier to add things to the portals with "One Click". -- Tak.

New Tasks
Hi all,
I've just put up the new Tasks for this iteration.
LAHORE TASKS
Generally, there isn't a big change in what Lahore is doing, but a few small shifts...
- Since Fatima was integral in getting LahoreTech started AND because PortlandTech is winding up (YEAH!), we've moved Saliha over to LahoreTech, knowing she'd be able to help fill Fatima's shoes.
- Ray recently sold a new portal (YEAH!YEAH!) which will be worked on entirely out of the Portland office (it's only about 60 pages). That plus the work we'll have to do in Portland on the PromoteMe offer has made us realize we might have over-extended by trying to work on the VancouverTech project too. So:
- We're going to hold off on VancouverTech this iteration and probably until PortlandTech is "DoneDone"
- Jehansher will switch to the SeattleTech team
- We've "officially" listed Mehrunnisa on PortlandTech, but since that project is nearly finished, the hope is that she'll continue to be a leader in Lahore and will help with a variety of projects/portals/tasks as needed, and will (in particular) be helping us with Reviewing articles and some other leadership tasks.
Beyond these changes, the RC Patrolling, PortlandTech, LahoreTech and SeattleTech tasks and teams are essentially as they have been.
PORTLAND TASKS
Some of the tasks Portland will be working on:
- Outreach to the community on PortlandTech
- Finishing up the Subdomain Generator and Portal Generator
- Writing for the PromoteMe offer
- The new Oldcastle APG portal project Ray sold
In addition to the list on the Tasks page, I've updated the duties/tasks everyone is working on on the page. If anyone has any questions, feel free to leave me a talk message or send an email.

NeedsReview articles
Hi all, I started to review the Category:PortlandTechNeedsReview and am noticing a lot of the same problems coming up (which probably apply to article writing for all of the Tech projects):
- Person pages not having a) the PortlandTech badge; b) not always do they have a link to the company's DomainPage or the person's title (where applicable). See: Frank Tycksen and Bill Funcannon for a couple of examples.
- The articles seem a little "light". A few are still nothing more than the original bot scrape that have had a products/people sections added. In general, the articles should be AT LEAST three sentences long, and usually will be two paragraphs. There are a lot of these, but here are a few examples: IpProTech.com, MicroField.com, Mytechpdx.com.
Since the Category:PortlandTechNeedsReview list is so long right now, it'd be great if a few of you could pair today and go through the Category:PortlandTechNeedsReview and identify these that are obviously still needing work and moving them to Category:PortlandTechNeedsWork and/or back to Category:PortlandTechInProgress (or add the badge/link if it's a quick fix). I'll go through the list again tomorrow and Friday and move things to "DoneDone" that are ready.
Thanks, TakKendrick | talk

SeattleTech questions
I Agree! Yes, the page should also redirect and there are few other as well which need to be redirected which I am doing now and there are some pages which when viewed, do not show the site due to some error, some sites are under construction.. but I have still added the badges and categories to them, if they any way seem SeattleTech related. Few pages are totally unrelated to SeattleTech so they are also ommitted.
Secondly, I have added {{SUBST:SeattleTechOtherCompany}} to those pages which are not tech related but were the result of intersections and were Seattle based....Please provide suggestions on it otherwise, I should update them as well...
I have started to remove the SeattleTechBadge from those intersections which are not Seattle based...see TechPages/NotSeattleBased
What will be the solution in case of Staenberg.com, which is a venture capital funding firm for Seattle but is in Santa Monica CA...?
Can Olympia related page be considered in SeattleTech as it seems close to Seattle for TimTyler.com and what about Tacoma, is this place also a little close to Seattle too?
Only Media section is left today, which will be done tomorrow as all of the work had been reviewed again today...
ThankYou!Asma
RESPONSES
- Seattle-related, but in other cities -- In the case of ones like your example of Staenberg.com, if they are clearly funding SeattleTech then they should be in the appropriate category.
- Actually, Staenberg's contact page lists them with a Seattle address now, so I changed that. Keep in mind a lot of the address we have aren't necessarily correct because they were register in WHOIS by parent companies. One thing we need to be doing when writing these articles is verifying the addresses.
- Seattle-area -- Looking at your TechPages/NotSeattleBased list, I'd include any companies that are in Olympia, Tacoma, Spanaway, Auburn, Poulsbo, and Woodinville in SeattleTech. Ones in San Juan Island, Vashon Island, and Bellingham are probably in BOTH SeattleTech and VancouverTech.

- SpiralGarden.com seems to be not Seattle and not Tech, yet badged as SeattleTech. Also, the site itself is simply a redirect. Shouldn't the WikiPage also redirect, to SorenSorensen.com? TedErnst (talk)
- I agree to both points, and made the suggested changes. Asma, if you disagree, feel free to revert it and let me know your thinking. TakKendrick | talk
