Thoughts on the Caricature Portal

  • Should we link to user pages directly from the caricatures? FatimaRaja 20:38, 29 November 2007 (PST)
    • Doesn't matter to me - I figured it was more important to link to a larger image of the caricature in this instance since the viewer is probably more interested in seeing the art than the user pages if they are on the 'Caricature Artists' page. Either way is cool with me though. ChrisBabson

Thoughts regarding LASIK

  • The idea of merging seems good but depends upon the (people search) in States ,e.g if someone wants to search for a particular area e.g Oakland and the results of all centers are displayed ...but if we do something to the document so that the curser points to only Oakland areas within the whole listing it would be more easier to locate a specific region...? We can put areas in groups and only highlight the background color to distinguish one from another...(e.g LASIK Centers in Oakland, CA group can have a blue background box,LASIK Centers in San Jose, CA can have a lighter blue box)...Thoughts only)
    • P.S (Would be adding LASIK Centers in Oakland, CA to LASIK Centers in the Bay Area, CA in the near future)Asma
    • Again this is where I'm hoping we'll have some sorting function in the future so you could sort the table by sub-area (city or borrough), or even by distance from some user-entered zip code! I think the suggestion below might work best for now - build the consolidated area page but keep the individual listings and link to them. Example: The Bay Area page will exist as a meta-page for San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose - 4 pages total.
  • Sounds good to me, as long as we're careful about redirecting all the cities to the area pages.
    • I'll start drawing up a list of metro areas here. Please add/ subtract/ modify, especially if you're more familiar with America than I am.
    • If we decide to merge cities into areas as Chris suggests, do we want to organise the area pages into headings for each individual city? For people in that area, I think it might be useful. Or Asma's suggestion, which I also like. We could also get all fancy and turn the area page into an image map showing the area, with links to the individual cities...
    • Once that decision is made, I hereby volunteer to alphabetise all city and area pages. - FatimaRaja 20:38, 29 November 2007 (PST)
  • On the subject of grouping by areas (like Bay Area) and the idea that it might be hard to discern individual cities (like Oakland), I had a couple of thoughts. First, LASIK is such a niche market that demands excellence (and price) that I'd think that someone in Oakland (for example) would like to know of clinics in his/her area (even if it's elsewhere in the Bay Area) that fits their particular needs. It's not like needing to find a local supermarket where you only want to be able to "go around the corner," anyone looking on the internet for LASIK is likely to be willing to travel a bit to serve their needs (whether it's quality or price).
    • I think this is correct as long as the consolidation doesn't make the list too long. The other option is to have some sorting function (as we will on the maps) or to retain the individual city pages as subpages linked to from the bottom. This is how things will probably progress for LASIK in New York so we can sub-organize.
That said, I did have one thought. Maybe we can incorporate the GoogleMaps into the various LASIK pages. On the main page, we can have a map that just lists the 40-some cities/areas with the clickable links then going to that city page. The city page can then also have a map (with clickable links to the clinics). This will allow someone to view the Bay Area map (for example) and only click on facilities that serve her/his particular city if they wanted. What do others think about this? (You can see the GoogleMap extension I'm thinking of in action on John's FortWiki.com page.) -- TakKendrick 20:55, 2 December 2007 (PST)
    • To note: we discussed this and are starting work on it today! Hopefully we can have something operational by the end of the iteration. ChrisBabson 10:27, 4 December 2007 (PST)

Caricature Portal

I just finished a brief framework mock up for the Caricature portal. We'll move forward to refine and pretty from here. Feel free to check it out and add thoughts/artists. ChrisBabson

Metro Areas in LASIK

One tiny issue with LASIK is that we've got separate pages for cities that may fall in the same metro area, or are close enough that residents travel back and forth. An example: Fort Worth, Dallas and Arlington. For now, I've put in a set of links at the bottom of each of those pages, pointing to the other two. Any views on this, any better suggestions etc? FatimaRaja 00:14, 29 November 2007 (PST)

  • I think we should group close cities together into an area page. Given the cost of the surgery, I think people are willing to drive farther, making the nearby results relevant. The texas example above sounds like a good place to start with this. Also, I've put LASIK Centers in San Francisco, CA into LASIK Centers in the Bay Area, CA - future content for LASIK Centers in Oakland, CA should be included here, as well as content from LASIK Centers in San Jose, CA. I think this consolidation makes sense giving the scope of the project. ChrisBabson
  • I agree with Chris. How does this feel with those in Lahore? If this has consensus over there, than can someone take initiative to make appropriate next actions (shouldn't be more than some minor cutting and pasting to fuse the pages, or am I missing something)? -- TakKendrick

Group Review by Mehr

This week saw a comeback of LASIK!!With the ContentTeam putting up all the items in Category:LASIK in the Category:LASIKNeedsReview tag I have spend a good many hours daily reviewing them. One third of the articles have been reviewed and put in the relevant tag of Category:LASIKDoneDone or Category:LASIKNeedsWork.I am hopefully going to finish reviewing all the articles before the next iteration. This new, should i call it revolutionary (!) procedure, of intersection tool to see progress of our tasks will put us in a much better position to judge our priorities and work load for future iterations.

Even though Lahore Team has the absence of its most active contributers Saliha and SAnwal who are on a leave till next week, and the permanent absence of Saba, PortlandTech is still nearing its goal of 100 articles which are put in the Category:PortlandTechNeedsReview.Kudos to the ContentTeam for their extra hours and hard work!!

The ContentTeam continues to patrol daily for one hour.It is worth mentioning that RC has been below 3000 all this week(a good reflection on the combined efforts of the content and community team).

Personal Job Descriptions also saw a completion.

Also Welcome our new ContentTeam member Jehansher.Im sure he will be a valuable asset to out team.

Additional Report from Portland

Congrats on all that was accomplished this week team! There's a few things we also got done in Portland I wanted to highlight as well. -- Tak

  • All job descriptions are DoneDone (except for the new hire - duh).
  • The "NeedsWork" notes were incorporated in the Category:PortlandTechNeedsWork page instead of the related task. This seems to be working.
  • We did some organizing on breaking down the tasks into more manageable pieces, that support larger projects. Hopefully, I'll be able to do more on this over the weekend, check for updates :)
  • The meeting this week on IRC was quite possibly our best yet! We also worked with Mehru to prepare the agenda for next week's meeting (see separate note above).
  • In the week ahead, we'll be really looking at how to support Ray's vision of what Content needs to do between now and the end of the funding round in March. This will significantly color our tasks and planning for the next couple iterations. We'll also be working on going through the Category:PortlandTechNeedsReview and start training some of our more experienced team members on how to be helping with reviewing the work.

On Leave

Saliha and Sanwal are on a leave.Sanwal will be back next Wednesday and Saliha will resume work at 1st of December. Moreover, I regret to inform that Saba will not be joining us.

Working from home

I'll be in Quetta on Monday and Tuesday (26-27 Nov). I'll be online whilst there, but my hours may be irregular. -- FatimaRaja 22:27, 21 November 2007 (PST)

Reminder: Meeting next Monday and Portland holiday

Hi all just a reminder that we'll be doing the Monday meeting an hour earlier this Monday (10 a.m. Lahore time) so that the Portland staff can get to bed early for a meeting here early the next day.

At about 9:45 I'll be online and start gathering everyone into the IRC channel so we can start promptly at 10. We'll post an agenda for the meeting on our Friday.

Also as a reminder, the Portland office is closed tomorrow (Thurs.) for Thanksgiving. Both John and Tak will be working from home on Friday, so email if you've got any questions or need anything. -- Tak

Short Term Focus and Priorities for the Content Team (PortlandTech)

Tak, John and I just met and discussed an overview of the priorities for the PortlandTech project. We thought it would be a good idea to post what we came up with here for everyone to get an idea of the direction of this project in the near future. This should help us all figure the day to day work we do into a large scheme for success. This will be a major part of the agenda for discussion on the Monday meeting, we just wanted to let everyone know what was coming.

Priority 1: Tagging

  • Tag every page in Category:PortlandTech (InProgress, NeedsReview, NeedsWork, DoneDone, and adding the badge to every page) (Leads: Chris, Tak - this will bring us that much closer to organizing all of the building blocks with the intersect tool, and help Ward with tracking the PortlandTech pages for the PortalTrafficReports task. Top priority for next iteration.

Priority 2: Structure

  • Maps - (Lead:John) Build map mockups for each of the subpages (i.e. blogs, etc.). This will be added to the task list for next iteration - we will bludgeon by hand for now, but down the line it may be a dev task to pull addresses from all of the pages listed in an intersected set. Also, in conjunction with the 'Add This Here' tool, we may have a 'quick-add' button down the line for ease of use.
  • Calendar (Lead:Tak) Build and pretty up a general calendar for PortlandTech events. Down the line this may be expanded to subsections to create more specific calendars. We may also incorporate an 'Add Event' tool.
  • Visual Upgrade (Vinh) General prettying up of the portal with graphics and improved UI. This will most likely be on the queue once we finish with the maps and calendar.
  • 'Add This Here' Tool (Dev) This will be added to the dev queue in one of the next two iterations, and will make it easy for others to add their pages to the various PortlandTech sub-pages.
  • Organize 'People' (Lead:Chris) This will be incorporated into a separate task in one of the next two iterations.

Priority 3: Coalesce Community

  • The project can only be successful if it can attract and retain a self-sufficient community. We need to brainstorm ideas with the community team on how to bring this about and continue to foster it in the future. The ultimate step is passing off continued maintenance to the community we've developed with supervision from the AboutUs community team. We will be creating a task for this in one of the next two iterations.

Job Descriptions = DoneDone

Congratulations to everyone for getting to DoneDone on the job descriptions task! This is a big step forward for us in terms of defining everyone's responsibilities and roles - we are becoming an organized content creation machine! ChrisBabson

LASIK Past Work Task

Saliha indicated to me that we had about 44 listings pages done (maybe 46) so far. I'm having a hard time finding all of these since they were never added to the LASIK portal page. I've started a list of pages to review that is attached to this week's task page - you can also find it here: LASIK/Status. I've found maybe 20 US cities so far, so I was hoping the team could finish this list based on what they've worked on.

Once we get this list complete the idea is to go back through and perfect the top 50 cities and then revamp the portal page to be simpler and cleaner, like PortlandTech. The focus will be these listings since they have the most value out of anything we've created on LASIK so far! ChrisBabson

Tuesday 20 Nov 07

Tak and I have been working hard to catch up with all of the article work generated in the past weeks. Looking now on the status page, the 'needs review' section is down to under 10! Congratulations to the whole team for getting this project on its feet and working efficiently! ChrisBabson

Group Review by Mehr

This week saw a lot of changes in the way we work and organize. With a lot of help from Mark earlier this week, PortlandTech saw break through changes as far as effectiveness and team motivation was concerned. With the ContentLog the Portal:PortlandTech has sped up and is more organized. With the PortlandTech/ContentDownDown updated at least once a week; it's providing great motivation for the staff here for what was otherwise seen as a monotonous task. There is a division of work in alphabetical order with each team member picking certain alphabet and building the pages under them. Two of the members have exclusively build out Portland Tech Category:Person pages; fine tuning and refining themExample here.

Note: The Portland tech badge in people's pages has been adjusted in all the listing. There shall be no need now to go back to them later and adjust it.

With an addition of team members in the Content team it is hoped by next week they would join in contributions in PortlandTech while the relatively older new recruits, more familiar with formatting by now, would be spread out to work on LASIKand speed up the process more.

As far as personal portal work was concerned Ray and MarkDilley have been kind enough to appreciate the efforts of our team on Portal:The Underground Act:Lahore. On the same lines the new interns have picked up ideas on starting and building new effective portals as their personal work. Moreover old portals such as the Portal:Art Talk Lahore have been fine tuned to make it more location specific.

The Content Team has also engaged in community work.Daily devotion of one hour atleast at the same time on RecentChanges has helped the community team to free up space for other tasks other then RC.An average of 1000 edits is patrolled daily.

Note: Today RC was cut down from 2900 to 300 in a span of 2 hours!! A brilliant effort!

End/Beginning of Iteration Metrics for PortlandTech

At the end of the Nov 1-15 iteration, we had:

  • 687 articles in PortlandTech
  • 244 articles were "DoneDone" (35.5% complete!)
  • 30 articles that still NeedsWork

Now that we have a metric, each iteration we can measure how much we've accomplished and set goals accordingly.

Meeting on Monday Morning (Sunday night in Portland)

John and I are calling another Content Team meeting on IRC for Monday morning 11 a.m. (Lahore time, 10 p.m. Sunday for us). Please try to be there if you can. After last week, we're going to try to stick to an agenda:

  • John, 15 minutes -- Talk about job descriptions, goals, and sponsorships
  • Tak, 15 minutes -- Check in on how the last iteration went, and if the new communications/tracking/tagging systems are working.
  • Tak, 15 minutes -- Briefly go over new tasks for the iteration

Thanks, Tak

Logo for Person Pages

Hey all, in order to do some tracking when building out PortlandTech pages please add the {{PortlandTechMember}} template to person pages instead of just the Image:PortlandTech_MotifSmall.png from now on. There's a special code in the template that does some sort of magic that Ward and Stephen cooked up earlier today. For old "person" pages that have the old image link, we'll have to fix at some point, but I'm not overly worried about them right now. Thanks. -- Tak

New Tasks

Tasks for the new iteration are up. There will be some fine-tuning to the tasks to happen tomorrow, but you can get the gist of what's new and what's to be focused on for the next two weeks now.

Category:PortlandTechNeedsWork

Today we moved the notes on pages that still "Need Work" onto the Category:PortlandTechNeedsWork page (before they were on the task page). Right now there's only about 20 or so on this list and most just need 15-20 minutes of love. These ones are so close to "DoneDone" if we can try to push them a bit that'd be awesome. -- Tak

Image Names

Hi all, great work this iteration. One thing I'm noticing occasionally (especially it seems with the "Person Pages") is bad image naming schemes. Websites will often name images things like Image:00000004-20070517100018-71103586remotemgr.jpg on Jeff Walton. Yuck! When uploading images, please be sure to give them an appropriate name (in this case, JeffWalton.jpg or RemoteMgr-JWalton.jpg). In part this is because if an image were named "MyLogo2.jpg" it's likely to get replaced on accident by some one else who also named their image that way.

Anyway, just take care on this. -- Tak

More DoneDone

Hi team, just wanted to say Chris and I went through over half of the "NeedsReview" articles today and we were pretty impressed. I for one am happy to announce we've identified 149 articles are "DoneDone" and of the 150ish we went through today, only 18 still "NeedsWork". That's a fabulous percentage. Keep up the good work tonight. We'll probably be able to get through the rest of the "NeedsReview" tomorrow, which will help us definitively see what's been done, and also provide a metric going forward on how many are being taken to "DoneDone" in future iterations.

I'll probably be at my computer (but not working) tonight if anyone needs anything, try to buzz me on IRC. -- Tak

DoneDone

Hey, great work last night on starting to categorize the PortlandTech pages. I went through and took a look at the "NeedsReview" and moved a few to "DoneDone." There's a bunch more in there that I'm pretty sure are "DoneDone" but I wanted to pair with Chris on it to make sure we're thinking the same things. Expect that tomorrow when you come in that list will grow to 100+. (Which would then indicate we're probably 1/6 of the way through these, with another 100-200 nearly "DoneDone"). Already it's making the task clearer for me at least and it means we can probably project to be 1/3 to 1/2 "DoneDone" by the end of the month. Tak

Project Status Page

To sort of show what we were thinking of with the category tagging, I created a PortlandTech/ProjectStatus page. This uses the intersect tool and dynamically shows all the articles and what state they are in. We don't have to use this from an organizational standpoint if in a few weeks we deem it isn't working right, but I did want to just demonstrate our thinking a little better. Tak

New Categories for tagging PortlandTech pages

Hey all, going through the "NeedsReview" list it became obvious real quick that there was a couple "Company" categories we were missing Category:Web 2.0 and Category:SEO. I went ahead and added them to the PortlandTech/Companies page, and low and behold, it already had a bunch that were self-referenced! Anyway, if you're working on an article and it seems to be a Web 2.0 or SEO firm (or both), go ahead and throw that category tag on there. Thanks. Tak

Friday, 09 November 2007

Hi all, I know this first day of the ContentLog is a lot of reading, we promise to try to keep it shorter in the future. Please do read everything closely and ask questions if you have any. -- Tak

Internal Category Tagging for PortlandTech pages

As there are now 600+ pages in the Category:PortlandTech it's been getting increasingly harder and harder to know the status of various articles (are they DoneDone, being worked on, needing review, etc.), and we're sure this confusion is frustrating for everyone. So, Chris, John, and Tak revamped the strategy for tracking these pages.

When writing/working on an article, add/update the following Category tags to reflect the article's status:

  • Category:PortlandTechInProgress -- content team members have identified this as a page that they are working on.
  • Category:PortlandTechNeedsReview -- a content team member has written the article, but it still needs to be reviewed by Chris/Tak/John (in upcoming weeks/month we'd like to appoint a Lahore-base team member to help with some of this)
  • Category:PortlandTechNeedsWork -- an article that has been reviewed by Chris/Tak/John, but still needs work to get it to "DoneDone".
  • Category:PortlandTechDoneDone -- it's done. Please don't add this tag to any pages; Chris/Tak/John will use this tag only when pages have been finalized as "DoneDone" by us.

This new system is in place IMMEDIATELY. Over the next week we'll be clearing out the previous pages for tracking status (like the PortlandTech/DoneDone Pages page); please don't edit or use the previous systems. Thanks. -- Tak

Communications

John, Tak and Chris are working hard to refine specific plans for communication between content folks in both offices and also between content and the rest of AboutUs. The first step in this program is the development of this content log for daily communication amongst the group. As part of this new effort, we're going to schedule some days during each period for group communications. So far we've come up with the following rough scheme on this:

  • Monday (10am): leaders send group email, talk page messages, log note and IRC check in
  • Wednesday (end of day): everyone posts a progress report on the log for themselves
  • Friday (end of day): team-leaders submit group reviews on the log and individual reviews on the relevant task pages

To reiterate, daily work updates will be posted on the appropriate task page. Communications outside of this framework will take place via talk pages and email.

Reports on the iteration will be posted to the log by team leaders on the first day of the following iteration.

ChrisBabson

Category Tagging of PortlandTech Pages (for intersect tool)

In order to facilitate the building of subcategory pages using the Intersect Tool in PortlandTech, as you write articles, please be sure to add Categories that correspond with what section(s) they belong in. (This will help us get to "DoneDone" faster, as we won't have to spend time after articles are written trying to categorize them.) Keep in mind to also add the "top level" category as well (ie. all pages in Category:Software will also be in Category:Company).

To help, here's the list of the tags we are currently using.

  • [[Category:Company]]
    • [[Category:Software]]
    • [[Category:Venture Capital]]
    • [[Category:Incubator]]
    • [[Category:Law Firm]]
    • [[Category:Other Company]]
  • [[Category:Media]]
    • [[Category:Blog]]
    • [[Category:Wiki]]
    • [[Category:Forum]]
    • [[Category:Newspaper]]
    • [[Category:Website Only]]
    • [[Category:Other Media]]
  • [[Category:Groups]]
    • [[Category:User Group]]
    • [[Category:Community]]
    • [[Category:Organizations]]
    • [[Category:Other Group]]
  • [[Category:People]]
    • [[Category:Consultant]]
    • [[Category:Lawyer]]
    • [[Category:CEO]]
    • [[Category:CFO]]
    • [[Category:Other Management]]

Thanks again for all the hard work. -- Tak
