Badging for the Portals

I just wanted to check in on making sure that all pages for a portal have the proper "Member Badge" (ie. {{PortlandTechMember}}, {{LahoreTechMember}}, {{SeattleTechMember}}, or {{VancouverTechMember}}). Not only do these badges tie the pages together and to the portal, but they are EXTREMELY important in tracking our visitors to the portal projects and, thusly, in generating future revenue opportunities.

Right now, for the various portals, the actual number of pages badged vs. the pages in the category is woefully off (theoretically these numbers should be the same):

  • PortlandTech: 652 pages badges against 999 in the category
  • LahoreTech: 148 badged/192 in category
  • SeattleTech: 127/190
  • VancouverTech: 20/26

Each team should go through their main category page ASAP and make sure that EVERY PAGE in their portal has the badge by Thursday. Likewise, it's extremely important when building these articles to make sure the badge is on the page (and I'd argue that the first step to building a portal is to first badge all pages, and then worry about building the articles). Thanks, Tak

Improved Content Team Page

Hi all, I've revamped the Content Team page, because the old format made it nearly impossible to see who was working on what (and therefore made the page not as useful). The new format shows what tasks we're working on as well as who is working on these tasks with us. I did modify all the images so a standard size (128px wide x 110px tall), if you want to change your image, feel free, but please keep it to that size or else the page will again be hard to navigate. -- TakKendrick

LahoreTech Discussion Page

  • We're trying out a new idea (shamelessly stolen from Community) to make discussion and communication easier. Take a look at our task page to see. Since this is done through templates, the box can be duplicated easily on any page, including user pages (Asad's for example). -- FatimaRaja 20:22, 26 December 2007 (PST)

SeattleTech categories

According to John's and Tak's thoughts about Category:Network, Category:Hoster and Category:Consultant, do we really need them separately for Seattle or others ? Some times when we view a tech, hosting or networking company page, the Category:Network, Category:Hosting and Category:Consultant are already there? and if we need separately for regions, then please make a SUBST:SeattleTechNetworks, SUBST:SeattleTechTelecomms, SUBST:SeattleTechHoster, SUBST:SeattleTechRecruits/Contractors, SUBST:SeattleTechNetwork/WebSecurity, SUBST:SeattleTechResume, SUBST:SeattleTechWebSurveys, SUBST:SeattleTechDataBaseDesign and SUBST:SeattleTechProfessionalTrainers Asma

  • The idea is that the SUBST templates take care of all the hierarchical pages. Technically, if there's already a Category:Network for example, then adding a SUBST:SeattleTechNetwork adds it again, but since the duplication doesn't hurt anything it's more important to ensure that the proper tagging is on these. -- Tak
  • In answer to the second question (adding more regions). I'd hold off on that. We don't want to make this too complex. If the lists are too thin, the intersect does some funky things (see PortlandTech/Media/Other Media), also more subcategories could get confusing. But if there's a consensus to add a few of these, then let's talk about it. -- Tak

Fatima has a few thoughts on LahoreTech categories

  • First: it's really easy to make those funny SUBST Tech category templates. If anyone would like guidance, let me know.
  • Second: there are some LahoreTech categories that I'd like input on. Do these belong in LahoreTech, and if so, is this the correct phrasing? - MedicalTranscription, BackOffice, CallCentre etc -- FatimaRaja 23:04, 23 December 2007 (PST)
    • Fatima, see my note above. I'm wondering it these subcategories are too much. I'm not sure, but it seems like maybe Medical and Support might be better and slightly more encompassing. -- Tak

New LahoreTech category?

Just wondering if we could have a category LahoreTechTelecommunications?
AyeshaAslam 21:01, 19 December 2007 (PST)

  • Done! {{SUBST:LahoreTechTelecommunications}} -- Tak

Mentor Graphics - LahoreTechMember badge?

Mentor Graphics is a PortlandTechMember. They have an office in Lahore as well so should I add the LahoreTechMember badge to it as well?
AyeshaAslam 23:28, 19 December 2007 (PST)

  • Yes, totally! Likewise, I've been amused that AboutUs.org hasn't been tagged as LahoreTech yet :) One note though: Just because they're "DoneDone" for PortlandTech, please add a paragraph about how they have a Lahore office to tie it to LahoreTech more (same goes for companies that are both PortlandTech and SeattleTech for that matter. -- TakKendrick

New Templates

In response to the thought below... I've created the following category template:

  • {{LahoreTechHoster}}
  • {{LahoreTechNetwork}}
  • {{SeattleTechConsultant}}
  • {{SeattleTechCRM}}
  • {{SeattleTechMarketing}}

John and I felt that Category:Network, Category:Hoster and Category:Consultant would be slightly better names than those proposed, to match with our other naming schemes. Please feel free to post more categories as needed here and I'll make the appropriate templates... -- Tak

Notes on LahoreTech

  • (Note from Asma on additional categories for SeattleTech): Can SeattleTechConsultancy, SeattleTechBusiness/CRM, SeattleTechMarketing be added to the above mentioned templates?

-- FatimaRaja 00:39, 19 December 2007 (PST)

  • I have been researching software houses in Lahore and have come across a number of them that have a Lahore address (on a web directory) but when I go to the main website for that software company, it only has the address/contact info for their American office. I am confused as to whether I should still tag these as a LahoreTechMember or not?

Agenda

Agenda for the Tuesday morning (Lahore) meeting:

10:00-10:15: Next iteration task list, teams - Tak
10:15-10:30: Seeding for LahoreTech, SeattleTech and VancouverTech -- Tak
10:30-10:45: LASIK, final polish - Chris (Chris is now on vacation)
10:45 Q&A

After the meeting my plan is to work directly with Mehr on Skype on how to seed the VancouverTech list (ie. create a list of pages to start working on). She'll then instruct the various other teams (LahoreTech, SeattleTech). I'll try to stay online to answer questions as well. -- Tak

Iteration, Monday, Tuesday Meeting

Hi all, just a quick check-in before you start your Monday morning in Lahore. We've posted New Tasks for the iteration, go ahead and take a look. We've assigned teams for the PortlandTech, LahoreTech, SeattleTech and VancouverTech projects based on the preferences people gave (and also trying to pair newer team members with more experienced ones so we can learn from each other). Take a look. We'll talk more about this at the Tuesday morning meeting (10 a.m. Lahore).

Monday tasks -- That said, because the new projects require some work to build "starter lists" (which Tak will be pairing with Lahore teams on Tuesday morning), for Monday, please keep working on PortlandTech, and last minute LASIK work (should be done now) and RC patrolling.

Tuesday meeting -- Again, we'll try doing the Content meeting on Tuesday morning. I've posted a Proposed Agenda, please feel free to add notes and thoughts. We'll finalize the agenda in Portland on our Monday.

Thanks all, we had a great iteration the first half of the month, and I'm excited to see how this next one goes. Talk to everyone on Tuesday! TakKendrick | talk Comment_green.gif 16:54, 16 December 2007 (PST)

Group Review by Mehr

LASIK's top forty cities reached its completion as the Content Team here worked all week to get the articles to the DoneDone Status.By the end of the day we will be left with a handful of articles ranging around 30 to 40.Well done to the Lahore Team for the completion of approximately 1000 pages/articles in a span of just fourteen working days.

Portland Tech was carefully defined as well and a clean up was conducted where non-tech companies were removed from the PortlandTech categories.

The Content Team continued to engage in RC Patrolling for one hour daily.

Welcome our new Portland Team member

Just wanted to make a shout out to Steven Walling who's joining us on the Content team as a part-time contract employee for a couple of months. Steven is a gifted Wikipedian and writer who will help us in a variety of areas, right now focusing on PortlandTech calendars and some of the longer articles needed. To see something Steven's written, check out AreasOfMyExpertise.com, which he did before joining us, and OregonBio.org which he's working on right now. -- Tak

Next Portal Assignments

If you haven't signed up with your preference of team assignment (PortlandTech, LahoreTech, SeattleTech or VancouverTech) please do so in the entry below. We'll be discussing the assignments and making plans accordingly tomorrow. -- Tak

Meeting Agenda

Again next week, we're going to try to have the Content team meeting on Mon. night (Portland)/Tues. morning (Lahore). I've moved this week's aborted agenda to a new date: Agenda: Content Team meeting, Dec 18 feel free to add comments and items through the weekend. We'll finalize the agenda on Monday morning in Portland. -- TakKendrick

Wednesday 12 December

LASIK

Looks like we're doing a pretty good job finishing up with things here, although there are still a lot of pages that need work. I'm going to be implementing intersected maps on all of the listings pages today and then the final task is to migrate them to the new template. Anyone want to help with this over the next iteration? We need one volunteer! ChrisBabson

People Pages for PortlandTech

Hi all, just wanted to reiterate that we've decided to STOP doing "People Pages" for the Tech portals. When building out the company information, go ahead and add photos of people and even "red link" them, but don't worry about creating the page for them any further. This process is taking too much energy (in creating, monitoring and reviewing); after talking to Ray the other day it was decided this step (or not taking this step) will greatly speed up how long it takes to get a portal up and running. Let me know if you have any questions. -- Tak

To note, as an extension of this I marked all people pages that had decent work on them DoneDone, and just removed the workflow tags from them otherwise. Result: there shouldn't be any more people pages in our queues of pages that need work. These pages have proven very valuable, but since they aren't as core to the effort right now as domain pages we're pushing them to the side for now. This may mean that we come back and build them out next year, or (we hope) that users will come as part of the outreach and build pages themselves based on the examples we already have. At any rate, good work so far - we've got a lot of valuable information here! ChrisBabson

Next Portals, Changes for next iteration

With LASIK ending this iteration (YAH!), we're still planning out the next iteration, but there are a few changes in light of discussions with Ray on what Content will be working on:

  • We'll be dividing the portal work in Lahore into 4 teams of two full-time staff (or three when two are part-time); you and your team mate will be responsible for building out your portal, with support from the Portland staff members on structure, calendars, etc.
  • This means we can be building 4 portals concurrently:
    • PortlandTech
    • LahoreTech
    • SeattleTech
    • VancouverTech
  • Once one portal is finished (like PortlandTech will be in a few weeks), that team will move onto a new portal project, to be determined.

That said, we'll be dividing the teams up, but would like input on what (if any) preference of a portal you'd like to work on. Keep in mind that there's only 2 staff per portal, so it's likely that you won't always get your first choice. To make this easy, I'm adding a list below, fill in your preference in order of most favorable first:

Ayesha (part time) -- LahoreTech, SeattleTech, VancouverTech, PortlandTech
Arsalan --
Asma --(Highest to lowest preference) SeattleTech, VancouverTech, PortlandTech, LahoreTech
Fatima (part time)-- LahoreTech, VancouverTech, PortlandTech, SeattleTech
Jehansher --
Mehrunnisa --
Mubin --
Saliha --
Sanwal --

Please try to do this TODAY so that we can divide the teams up before the iteration starts on Monday. Thanks, Tak and John

Wednesday Reports

Tak's Wednesday Report

  • Spent a lot of time working with Chris, John and Ward behind the scenes on the PortlandTech pages, organizing and figuring out the implementation for calendars, maps, navigation bars, etc.
  • Started putting these things into action. (A more full "changes to PortlandTech post will be forthcoming, probably after I get some lunch.)
  • Worked with Ray, Chris, John and Ward on outlining a bit of what Content's push (new portals) will be over the next couple of months. (See note above.)
  • Made a report with Chris on the status of the PortlandTech project (and all portals in general) at last night's stakeholder meeting.

Group Review by Mehr

Setting off the week with LASIK as the primary task;out of the 53 cities the top 40 cities are to be neared the status of DoneDone. The remaining cities and their relevant artiles have been put in Category:LASIKForLater. With hard work from the Content Team we are now left with a total of 253 articles. With each content team member completing a suggested target of 9 to 10 pages daily we are hoping to reach our task goal.

Asma directed an approach towards introducing fresh ideas for the LASIK Portal. These ideas are in its initial stages of implementation and we hope it will work towards making it more effective and exclusive.

With a preoccupation with LASIK as the primary goal personal portal work was ignored due to lack of time. Here's hoping that next week would bring in more oppurtunities and flexibility to devote some time there.

The week also saw refinement on the definition of PortlandTech spearheaded by Mubin and Sanwal.Jehansher has picked up the WIKI formatting in a relatively short span of time and has already become an integral part of the team.Arsalan has been sadly sick for a week now. Here's wishing him a get well soon:) Moreover,Saliha is back from her trip to Dubai and is back to work.Welcome back!:)

Heres taking a moment to mourn the transfer of one of our team members, Fatima who has been lured by the very sneaky community team into their camps:)

Monday meeting on a Tuesday

To keep with our "wacky what day is it?" theme of today's posts (see the next update below), it's been proposed that we try moving the regular IRC meeting to Tuesday morning (Lahore). We want to try it out this next week and see if it works or not.

Also, I'm wanting to try out a different way of setting meeting agendas and have created a "task" that's really just building the agenda: Agenda: Content Team meeting, Dec 11. It is also listed off the Task Page. Please feel free to add items to the agenda you'd like to discuss. The "What is the definition of PortlandTech" discussion we had last week was fruitful, but it would've been nice to have had that previously in the agenda. If there's something you'd like to talk about, the Agenda: Content Team meeting, Dec 11 is the place to get it on the list. We'll finalize the agenda on Monday morning in PDX a few hours before the meeting. After the meeting, that page can become an artifact about the discussion, with a meeting report and next steps clearly spelled out to anyone who missed the meeting. -- TakKendrick

Wednesday Report on a Thursday

The Wednesday report for me is mostly to notice that we all managed to forget to do Wednesday individual reports yesterday. (Ooops. I blame myself for not remembering to remind everyone.) If we can at least get everyone to make individual or group reports for Friday though I'll still be happy :)

Otherwise, I've spent the week doing a bunch of stuff, yesterday we had a management training seminar that was fairly productive, earlier in the week we've been pushing on some dev-related tasks that are pretty necessary for PortlandTech to be launched. These tasks are:

The status of when Dev will be able to work on these tasks is still up in the air, but we've at least articulated our clear need with Dev and this has been noted for their team's iterations scheduling purposes. -- TakKendrick
