Smogon's History

Smogon has quite a lengthy history behind it. Smogon originated from IRC many years ago from a bunch of different groups or IRC channels. The earliest channel this could probably be traced to is #neodome on irc.sorcery.net (2001). The original Smogon forum was originally made as a place to chat for the members of #rs in May 2004. It was tightly knit community and, I stress, very unaccepting to new people.

Smogon was released as a full blown site in Decemeber, 2004. It specializes in, and only in, the competitive aspects of Pokémon games. It featured a StrategyDex with in-depth battling information for every evolved Pokémon in the game. Smogon quickly grew in size and is one of the major Pokémon communities on the internet (we gained 1500 members in half a year!).

The official English NetBattle server is run by Smogon. The owner of the site, chaos, is part of the development team for this program. It regularly gets over 100 people battling at the same time every day.
