AboutUs

Messages/Goals

  • Bury negative SEO (most of which has since been back-peddled on by authors and which is not representative of overall sense of the co.)
  • Define the company: what does it DO?
  • Articulate message: self-organizing of information leaves individual person, and company, more in control

Social Media

Our Plan

How can AboutUs best use social media?

Simply, relevantly, to the point. (Give info to AboutUsites, potential AboutUsites and wiki freaks.)

  • Blog: 3xwk; (mulitple employee contribute)
  • Del.icio.us: daily+; save AboutUs-specific material but also wiki mindset & wikiworld info (mass employee contribute)
  • Flickr: as-needed; window into our wiki world (mass employee contribute) (start account)
  • Twitter: daily; Twitter Daily Buzz, blog posts and fun, interesting stuff around the shop, as well as travel and meetups (multiple user contribute)
  • Ustream: occasional; live chats on various topics (start account)
  • YouTube: occasional; visual access to both work environment & how-tos & case studies
  • Facebook, Facebook product page, MySpace, MySpace group: Do we have enough fans of the company itself to justify these? If not, can we make a wiki mindset group? Or, should we wait for a while?

Notes

  • M: I wanted to go back and forth a little re. the first post to get a few numbers right and get a feel for what you guys like; I'm ready to make a few adjustments and post tomorrow, or ASAP. Were you checking something about the tech on the blog?
  • M: (4/17): I tried to drop the wikimarkup-ed post into both the visual editor and the code editor in the WP program and neither resulted in links. Can you take a look? Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying? Meanwhile, I'm touching base with a couple folks about inside-wiki pages and their effect on SEO.
  • I know ONE problem with linking internally to AboutUs-hosted wikis instead of the site outside is that there is not going to be any link-back, which is part of the juice you're searching for. If I have an AboutUs wiki, I'm probably not going to have any traffic stats on it. However, I will have those stats on my blog - hosted or not - and my private site. So, for the sake of SEO, for that alone, I think you're definitely going to want to link to, say CBS.com rather than aboutus.org/cbs.

Draft

1. AboutUs is made of wikis, and the wiki mindset informs everything. As we get feedback from users, we actively, dynamically and persistently adjust what we do and how we do it, to more accurately reflect the needs and wishes of the users.

Concerns

  • Natalie – My registrar’s TOS for WHOIS info says: “The compilation, repackaging, dissemination or other use of this data is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of Register.com.”
  • I’d like at the very least an RSS feed to subscribe to changes being made to sites I’m connected to. King says that’s a high priority and will soon be one of a number of extensions he’s made to his MediaWiki implementation.

Positive

  • The site has virtually no value today; BUT, if the traffic trends are a harbinger of these guys become the de facto wiki people go to for editing or viewing info on companies, this becomes the wiki version of Hoovers, which is something I would invest in…
  • The vision of AboutUs hinges on the power of collaboration and the unique capacity of wiki technology to capture the coming together of communities.
  • Because no single resource is as powerful as the one that can tap into the knowledge of every visitor, AboutUs stands front and center as one of the most valuable information resources on the web. By synthesizing informational and commercial sites, AboutUs creates a vibrant community asset. - this is a bit vague
