The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit consortium working for the promotion, protection and standardization of Linux by providing unified resources and services. Their services include legal protection, standardization, promotion and collaboration. The Linux Foundation aims to close the gap between open source and proprietary platforms, while sustaining the openness and technical superiority of open source software.

By using the open source model, the process of development can be made faster, of higher quality, with better security, shorter development cycles, and lower prices than closed platform development models.
