09-14-06 Modifying Domain template
Hello Ray, I tried to install a counter on my domain page first on the bottom of the body and then in the sidebar on the right, but nothing worked. You can still see the 'script =' html string that I added underneath the 'map =' line. The counter runs on java, with an external link to the source, take a look on my 'edit' page in the {{ }}. -- Either I wrote the code wrong, or you (your techies) would have to modify the Domain Page Template to allow dynamic external applications to run on the page. Please let me know what's up with this. Many thanks! --Planetarian | talk
Improving signature
Shouldn't it be more like this? --Oliver | talk 01:57, 1 September 2006 (PDT)
What about non-domain pages?
There are categories that have been created. In case of my domains these categories list mostly names of software I wrote. Should these pages be filled with some useful content, too? --Oliver | talk 01:58, 1 September 2006 (PDT)
- Yes, improving the category pages with information specific to the category is definitely a great idea! --User:Ray King | talk 09:38, 1 September 2006 (PDT)
WikiImages.org
Ray, hi. I'm Suren, i have a domain call WikiImages.org i like to do a wiki site, can u help me, my mail id surendran@mail.com... still i'm waiting for your mail, can you please setup a site for me.
- I can help you set up a page on AboutUS For WikiImages.org. But since I don't see the site resolving, I'm guessing you're asking for help setting up your own wiki site at that address? User:Ray King | talk 09:25, 16 October 2006 (PDT)
100 Geeks
Ray, hi. I'm Tony, from the "100 Geeks" gathering - this is my usual screenname. It's good to see that the site's live; I've already got a few pages on my watchlist. I guess I should just dive in and start editing descriptions that I see need editing? -GTBacchus 15:35, 28 June 2006 (PDT)
re HookahForum.net
I didn't know about the add missing domain utility, so I just copied another page's code and changed the details. I hope that was ok... -GTBacchus 12:53, 14 July 2006 (PDT)
thanks - still grasping this
Think I am understanding better why you just wanted me to organize union websites... ;-)
Doing something wrong with Automagical Linking?
Hi Ray: please can you check http://www.aboutus.org/Category:Stubbington ... why does the link to the "Domesday Book" page not work in this line > Thanks, Robert.
Ah ha ... the help did not say to also put a colon before Category too: [[:Category:Domesday Book|Domesday Book]] ;¬}
- yeah, that confused me at first also :-)
Disambiguation pages
Hi Ray: how do I create a disambiguation page? I am thinking here about geographic location names such as "Crofton", "Hill Head" and the ubiquitous "Springfield" of Simpson's fame. How do you see that side of the site developing? ... am I putting effort in the totally wrong direction? Regards, Robert.
- you can just create a page such as Crofton and then link subpages such as Crofton - something to it.
- You're on the right track, although the site currently contains mostly website articles, over time I'd love to see people create pages around those pages, such as disambiguation pages, terms that are uses by multiple sites, category pages that direct users interested in a certain area, etc. If you're interested I could really use some help with welcoming new users and helping them along -- but only if that is of interest.
- On disambuguation, I think my answer assumes that you were referring to a normal article. Crofton is a category page currently, so in that case, other articles with that category can be subcategorized so they show up in subcategories (see Table Tennis as an example. Also, we are currently trying to create some tools which help manipulate categories across multiple articles more easily. I will keep you posted on that.
Request Delete
Whoops: please delete page "http://www.aboutus.org/Hill_Head".
- There's still some stuff on this page? So just double checking....
- Its a duplicate of http://www.aboutus.org/Category:Hill_Head ... my bad ;¬[
AboutUs question
How would I go about removing a listing that was created without my consent? Simply deleting the html in the editor didn't stick (looks like it was restored by AboutUsBot.) Thanks kindly for your response.... - JB :)
- We've just posted an article on the AboutUsBot and there will be more information shortly.
Recommendation for Removal Procedures
Might I recommend honoring robots.txt (this may require the AboutUs bot being designated as a specific user-agent, if you haven't done so). If a site owner wants to be removed on the next crawl, he can simply add the appropriate entry to robots.txt. Furthermore, you may want to honor the META tags for robots in individual pages, in this case "noindex" and "nofollow" might apply for exclusion from AboutUs. --RKrause 03:55, 18 August 2006 (PDT)
- Absolutely. In addition, obeying a meta robots tag for nocache/noarchive would help eliminate cached info as well as instructions to remove all history entries/references to the domain.
- Thanks, Ray! I just got your note, and I see you've put up a procedure for bot exclusion. Thanks for being so quick on implementing the suggestion as I'm sure many site owners will find it valuable. By complying with robot standards, it should alleviate most concerns. Great work. I'll probably come up with more ideas as I have time. --RKrause 22:41, 30 August 2006 (PDT)
AboutUs question
Is there a way to communicate that isn't public, since I wouldn't want to advertize which domain I want removed by posting it here (plus, that way I could also answer privately any questions that ya might have to confirm me as the likely owner of the domain.) Thanks.... :)
- sure, please e-mail me at

how to categorize
Hullo Ray, I can't seem to add articles to relevant categories.
- Add the category such as "[[Category:Kayaking]]" to the article and then it will appear in the category page --User:Ray King | talk 09:08, 12 August 2006 (PDT)

Request Delete of page for ai p pg.net (remove spaces to get correct domain name) I own that and would want the pages , history deleted including my personal information. can email to sitename@sitename.com to confirm. I deleted them once but the bot restored that

Ray, Just got your responce, I hope Im replying in the correct field? Yea, not sure about catagory field, what exactly goes there? I was thinking it was similiar to the meta tags of the site??

Hello from Wikidweb
Hi Ray! Looks like we're competition. I like your spin on the idea, as well as the voting and reviews features. I've been depending on using talk pages for reviews, but I think I need something a little more intuitive for people not familiar with wikis. Kind Regards, Aerik Sylvan - founder, Wikidweb.com
- Great to see you and thanks for dropping by. Let's chat soon and compare notes --User:Ray King | talk 12:22, 9 September 2006 (PDT)
- I've spent some time researching your site some more and I see you have managed to attract quite a lot of attention in short amount of time - very impressive! (what's your secret?) And I've seen that your method for dynamically building content (clever!) has also attracted a lot of negative comments. Any you seen to have been resonably successful in attracting some editors (User:MarkDilley notably) - very cool. I've got to admit that I share some of the criticisms - it was a bit alarming to see my whois information and a google map to my address dynamically created on my Wikidweb.com listing, even though it is public information. Kind Regards, Aerik Sylvan
- Understood, I scrubbed your address - R

Hey Ray, thanks for the call, I sent you a note to your email address. Is this how you intended to use the "talk" pages?
Categories
Hi, I noticed that the AboutUs-Bot reads out the meta-keywords-tag of webpages and adds these keywords as categories. E.g. one of my sites has the keyword 'p2p'. Because wikis don't like words starting with a lowercase letter the category is 'P2p'. Other sites have 'P2P' as meta-keywords-tag. Those sites are in the category 'P2P'. So there are 2 categories for the same topic. Do you have an idea how to fix that issue? Yours sincerely, --David T. 06:54, 16 September 2006 (PDT)
AboutUsWeblog.org
Hi Ray, I don't really understand this wiki 'AboutUsWeblog.org' which lists all the AboutUs "Featured Sites", yet the outbound link on that page's thumbnail goes to some commercial domain/page with tons of advertising links and a search box on top that does not work: that site I absolutely do not understand, much less its relationship to what you are doing HERE... The only connection seems to be that YOU own both domains. And now you are setting up this weird network of interlinking... Quite frankly, I am happy to have my domain indexed here at AboutUs, but I don't want to be "sold down the river" (so to speak) to all kinds of other 'sister-sites' that are blatantly commercial...
Where exactly are you going with this? --Planetarian | please enlighten me! 10:05, 17 September 2006 (PDT)
PS: If this is the 'price to pay' for being an AboutUs Featured Site, then p l e a s e take me off the FS list! Thanks.
- No no no, I just registered the name so we can use it later on. GoDaddy.com, the registrar I used put up their standard parking page which I have nothing to do with. The plan is create a companion blog so that we can provide an RSS stream to people who want that.
Okidoki, then please allow me to take myself off the list on that wiki until such time that you got things set up properly. I really don't need the big SE's to index this 'parking page' in connection with my NON-commercial domain...! Agreed? --Planetarian | please give me the ok and i do the edit
- Yes, of course, we'll probably have it set up in a week or two --User:Ray King | talk 22:20, 18 September 2006 (PDT)
DONE - Thanks! AboutUsWeblog.org click on 'history' and see. --Planetarian: Over & Out :-) 22:35, 18 September 2006 (PDT)
Licensing
Hi Ray.
We've been talking over at Wikipedia, and I've been directing some people here, and suggesting others do the same, especially when this seems to be the site they're really looking for, to write about their own website. (As you know, Wikipedia doesn't necessarily need or want an article on every domain on the internet; at AboutUs on the other hand, that's kind of the point.) Anyway, a question has come up over how the material contributed here is licenced. Are submissions here released under GFDL or some similar free licence? -GTBacchus 11:44, 20 September 2006 (PDT)
- Right now we're still looking into this and how it will affect the project longterm. As we move out of Beta we should have an answer. Thoughts welcome --User:Ray King | talk 23:17, 20 September 2006 (PDT)
- That should have been the first thing you decided! At the moment your contributors are adding material under... well, erm, under an unknown licence! It's not clear if anybody has a right to publish it, and it's very hard to change these things retrospectively. I suggest you come to a decision pronto! --Kingboyk 10:55, 27 October 2006 (PDT)
- You are right and I will prioritize --User:Ray King | talk 13:41, 27 October 2006 (PDT)
ICrSurvey.com
Ray, take a look at the title of the article at "ICrSurvey.com". I'm an employee of ICR (International Communications Research), and I've never seen our domain capitalized that way. If there's some way you can easily change it, I think that "ICRsurvey.com" would be more appropriate parlance. Thanks. If you need to contact me, call Greg at area code 484, then 840-4369. (We've talked before.)
- Fixed and if you see any others, here's how to fix them. --User:Ray King | talk 11:49, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
Google Map
Note, also, the Google map doesn't seem to display our proper location, about 6 miles west of downtown Media. Strange thing, when you CLICK the map address, it loads the approximately correct location. Why's that? -- Semi-anonymous.
- Yeah, I've noticed that on just a few also and I'm not sure how to fix it. Can you tell me the domain so we can take a closer look at it? --User:Ray King | talk 11:49, 25 September 2006 (PDT)
- It's ICRsurvey.com. -- Greg

Content from Wikipedia
Hi, Ray. How's it going? I just had an idea about sharing some content between Wikipedia and AboutUs. What do you think of this edit, which uses content from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topix.net ? Is that legit, to import Wikipedia descriptions verbatim? -GTBacchus 20:42, 19 November 2006 (PST)

editing/writing
Hi Ray. I am in interested in editing and writing for AboutUs. What is the compensation for the work?
- This is a volunteer effort and we'd be happy to have your help in any area you wish to flush out. Let me know if you are interested - Ray.
- I'm sorry. I thought I read that this is a for-profit business. Do you intend to make a profit? I don't mean to be difficult, and I'm happy to take this discussion to e-mail, but I'll have to think about the ethics of having a tiered worker system: those who profit materially and those who volunteer (and wind up serving management).
- I do hope you'll respond. I might still be interested, albeit in a scaled-back way. I could focus on the not-for-profit causes (mostly women's issues) that I care tremendously about. I'm not much of a techie, but I do have an M.A.+ in English and a lot of editing experience.
- I'd love to chat, let's set up a time next week (I'm traveling this week), please contact me by e-mail - ray [at] aboutus.org.
I Wikipedia Editors - Reluctant to Include Article On AboutUs.org
I recently began a Wikiarticle on AboutUs.org. Without checking the Google search results or Alexa rankings, the article was scheduled for speedy deletion, now just deletion possibly. I was at one point accuse of self promotion! AboutUs.org is a GREAT idea.. and is the answer to all of the frustration with the hidous DMOZ "open directory" that really isn't! Most catagory editors are either too busy, or have an interest possibly of not including other listings. I have always wanted a DMOZ alternative because they just will not reply to ANY requests for years. This is what Wiki is to the old stale encylclopedia's of the past.
The only problem is the Wiki editors are reluctant to list AboutUs.org, not seeing it as relevant as they would DMOZ.. etc..
If you are reading this- please visit Wikipedia and comment positively on AboutUs.org so it can remain an article.--162.83.180.170 12:47, 2 December 2006 (PST)

Patrol in Brazil
Hi Ray
I'm from Brazil and just a newbie here. As i was helping in Wikipedia in the past i have some knowledge for here but please tell me everything that is needed here.
I want also to patrol Portuguese language reviews. Brazilians can be very good and very bad in the international communities as you know.
Thanks for your attention
Cheers Clonesoldier
- I'm in Brazil now! Are you any where near Sao Paulo? --User:Ray King | talk 16:56, 5 December 2006 (PST)
- You are in Brazil? Great! I thought no one from Brazil were here ^^
Nope, i'm in the extreme south, RS (Rio Grande do Sul)
And before my login (i forgot to login) i have made these reviews based on one stuff that i love: tokusatsu.
http://www.aboutus.org/Category:Tokusatsu
http://www.aboutus.org/Category:Kamen_Rider
What do you think of it? Are they good? Need some changes? And there are some "other language" sections here or i can write articles both in English and Portuguese?
- Those articles are great! Unlike Wikipedia.org, we have multiple languages together. Please feel free to write in Portugese or English and to add any section you wish. We don't have many Portugese edits yet, but will be happy to ask you when we do. Are you familiar with IRC? If so, we can talk on the #AboutUs channel sometime --User:Ray King | talk 20:32, 5 December 2006 (PST)
Thank you for liking it. Those texts can be better, but i need some time to add information up there ^^
As you said i will start double language in all articles. This is very fun for me. I only need to learn some Spanish until start some reviews in this language... :(
Yes,i'm familiar with IRC but unfortunately i have no time for it. With work and house jobs i have only some time to play in the internet or read something. But i will enter as soon as i can ^^
And for last, i will be very happy to help here.
Cheers Clonesoldier
- We're very happy to have your help, please also feel free to interact with any of the sysops if you have questions or comments. Thanks! - Ray.
Thank you Ray. I will let a word for each one here from time to time. Plus,i like to learn and exchange ideas with other people. ^^
