History

aol started as an information provider because at that time, world wide web was not active at all. So aol signed up many companies to provide information to its customers. big TV companies, such as cbs, abc were competed between aol.com and compuserve.com. Almost no business had their own web sites. So aol was able to provide a place where those business can provide its information to aol customers. For example, if a customer types in keyword abc, a page about the TV station abc will pop up which customers can get the current TV information, etc. And those businesses were also actively advertising aol's keyword thru their own media.

aol was notriously known to send people computer disks. It also constantly redesign its package from paper to wood to tin can.

It used to charge people $1.95/hour to use aol or the internet. People can even be charged by minutes for using the internet. During the early 2000's, it suddenly switched its limited free hours price plan to unlimited usage $19.95/month. Unlike netcom.com which only provides internet service, aol also provided many extra information. Because the internet at that time was still charged by hours by most internet providers, so many people swtiched to aol. However, aol's customer service did not expand accordingly. Customers were unhappy, some customers even filed lawsuits against aol. It took aol a while to hire more people to settle down the unhappy customers.

As the internet became more popular, many companies start to creat their own web sites, even though they continue to have aol keywords. Sooner or later, those companies abandoned aol, and simply used their own web sites. As the computer technology progresses, aol also started to switching from free disks to free CDs, it continue to send its old customers and new future customers aol installed CDs in differnet package. Unlike those disks which people can erase and use for other things, aol's CDs are not rewritable. People can only threw them in trash.

In the middle or late 1990's, aol began to expand to other countries in Europe and Asian such as HongKong and Japan.

Now even today in 2006, aol also abandoned its own contents, and switched all of its information from its own aol pages to the world wide web pages. And it seems that aol has also stopped sending people free aol CDs. However, their free CDs can still be seen at stores, postal offices, etc.
