Wikia is a wiki host, providing free online spaces to collaborate with people who share your interests. Using the same free and open source MediaWiki software that also runs Wikipedia, Wikia was launched in 2004 by Jimmy Wales (founder of Wikipedia) and Angela Beesley.
Whereas Wikipedia is a free general encyclopedia for factual content with a neutral point of view, Wikia exists to "fill out the rest of library." Formerly called Wikicities, they changed to Wikia in 2006. Today, they've supported the creation of thousands of vibrant wiki communities covering everything from sports to gaming to toys.
All Wikia sites are freely licensed, and to avoid overlap and other problems, you need to request a Wikia wiki before it can be created.
