That was likely a misplaced edit of sorts, which could be or could be seen as vandalism. We're not very block-happy here at AboutUs and we generally try to just revert unconstructive edits and try to communicate with the person to convert them into a valuable editor. As far as automated spam goes we recently set up a captcha requirement for non-logged in people that are adding external links (see CAPTCHA For LinkSpam), and of course we have people patrolling RC. We have both staff/employess (see Category:AboutUsPortland and Category:AboutUsLahore for 90% of these) and also we have some non-staff sysops that really like it here and help out around the wiki.
