I live in Belleville, Illinois, a part of the St. Louis Metro Area. I also live with my teenage boy and 2 dogs, a german shepherd and a doberman. I am 44 years old and feel the same as I did when I was in my 30s. I do not work out much but I am always active and try to maintain my health. You would usually find me at home doing something constructive, not watching TV or being idle.
WORK
My office is attached to the house so that I can provide graphic/design services to my clients and be at home. Art has become my main source of income and I can't think of anything better to do with my work-time.
On the side, I create illustrations. I use mixed-media and I do not paint. My illustrations are done by hand, the traditional way and at the same time, I occasionally create digital illustrations to experiment with ideas and concepts. I am a conceptual artist, some would call it symbolic art, either way I enjoy creating works that convey a message in the non-traditional way. I sometimes create abstracts and that is usually done with digital art.
NON-PROFIT WORK
Most people are diverse and have many different interests. I have taken on the huge task of getting a gallery off the ground with 3 other ladies. It is a huge task but one that we are willing to do until it comes to fruition.
I also donate my time to open-source projects that need art or business development assistance. Some projects need help on the business end and my extensive experience and education allow me to weave in and out of the two very separate areas.
SPIRIT
I am a very spiritual person and believe if I apply the correct truths to my life, I will succeed in all areas of life. So far, I have been very blessed and truth has served me well. I also believe that if you do what you love, the income will follow. Of course, with the prudent knowledge that if you really suck at what you love, keep your day job.
The Golden Rule is number two on my priority list and the First Commandment is my absolute first priority. I gives me a practical and spiritual path to travel on that is steady and sure. Because of that, I can follow the Golden Rule appropriately.
PLAY
Playtime usually involved taking my boy to the batting cages. I goof around in the garage at times or I am spending time with friends. The majority of my free time is with my child and I believe that close involvement with your child keeps them free from drugs and other associated ills or trouble.
HISTORY
I was born in Erie, PA and my parents were on the lower income scale. I was sent to Catholic School for 13 years (1 year of Catholic College). I had the typical Irish Catholic upbringing, of which I am sure many out there have had the pleasure of hearing comedy routines take note of the many funny and strange things involved.
I eventually married an Air Force Sergeant and we traveled to Germany, California, Saudi Arabia and Illinois. I have seen and done many things that most people do not get the opportunity to do. I am very appreciative of that and the fact that I was able to do it in my 20s and 30s - not my 60s when I would be too decrepit to enjoy it.
My former occupations formed the career that I have today. All I can say is that I should have gone to college sooner. Here is the progression:
Receptionist Drug Store Clerk Billing Clerk Accounts Payable Clerk Bookkeepper Waitress Hotel Front Desk Clerk Office Temp Dominoe Pizza Worker (Germany) Leasing Agent Property Manager More Office Temp jobs (moving around sucks) Pizza Delivery Client Services Coordinator Office Manager Technical Assistant Freelance Web Designer & Developer Bail Agent (yes, I had a bounty hunter's license) Marketing & Graphic Designer Business Owner & Non-Profit Executive
In between all that I completed my BS in Information Systems and my MA in Business Administration. I received them from Canterbury in the UK. Although I didn't obtain an education in the greater portion of what I do today, it gives me the knowledge to run my own business and to assist others that I come across in my work.
ADVICE
A few words about what I have learned in life and my advice as a result of that:
If something or someone doesn't seem right, 9 times out of 10, it isn't. The other 1 time, that person is just having a bad day.
If someone tries to control you, there is a reason why.
You are what you believe. You do according to what you believe. Be careful of what you believe.
Information and advice for an alien visiting earth for the first time. It should be called, "how to survive a trip to earth".
First, aliens should know:
People are followers and desire to be led. People don't like change of any sort. People always have to blame someone for bad things that happen, it must be someone's fault. People do not take responsibility screwing up their own lives. People are only one quarter as smart as their degree says they are. The important professions are the lowest paid professions. It has been known to happen that people actually kill one another. Religion makes people do weird things, even kill other people by blowing themselves up. Some people automatically hate someone else just because of their skin color. It's not safe to walk alone at night and in many places, in the day. Some people get addicted to drugs and are punished instead of receiving medical treatment. We actually have a foster care system because some parents don't care for their children or even beat them. People talk about sex a lot, as though it isn't a private matter, yet, they have code words for diarrhea. Despite their pretty exterior, women are much more ruthless than men and they even sabotage each other whereas the men stick together. Women don't have the power in the world, because men stick together.
LESSONS
I have had the experience of being a divorced woman for 7 years. One of the most important lessons in life for me was to understand that a man cannot, by his existence in your life, make you happy or worthwhile. That has to come from within and when it gets rough, settling for someone is not the answer. When you come to a point that you are happy and content being by yourself, you are then ready for a serious relationship with someone.
