Description

I can’t think of any special reason why I should attempt a compendium and update of Navy terms, any more than should any other of a number of qualified authors, but I seem to be the only one trying it, for some years. There are, of course, a number of books on the topic, but they are a bit long in the tooth presently. So, bear a hand, sailors, and help me to assemble the newest and the oldest, the technical and the merely whimsical, terms which help to give the Navy its special salty flavor. By all means, throw in all the saltiest sea stories you can remember (only the strictest truth, of course!).

Stroll through the alphabetical listings you see here, and, if you know of one or more I’ve missed, I and subsequent readers will be grateful if you would send me an E-mail with details.

As for me, Jim E. Davis, I served aboard the USS Midway (CVA 41) two years, mostly in European waters, and another two in Naples, Italy, attached to the NATO command there. At which point, in 1956, I opted for life as a civilian, but stayed 19 years in the Reserve, and retired as Commander, USNR.
