- Before you go saying, “Wait! That girl’s not punk! What a bunch of poseurs!” let’s get one thing straight, bub: Our definition of “punk” can loosely be applied to a wide spectrum of underground, non-mainstream styles, be they goth, indie, new wave, rave, geek, rockabilly, industrial, deathrock, etc. Ever see the movie, Urgh! A Music War? It had live performances from some of the most varied acts around in the late ’70s, early ’80s punk/new wave scene: The Police, Wall of Voodoo, Dead Kennedys, The Cramps, DEVO, Oingo Boingo, Gary Numan, X, Joan Jett, etc. At the time, most of this stuff was considered pretty radical and weird, and it was all lumped in together to be enjoyed by those kinds of people (usually said with a nose jutting stiffly in the air by some tool of The Establishment or another). Even if Johnny Slash on the ’80s television series Square Pegs made the distinction that he was New Wave (and definitely not Punk), the point is this: We here at Hotpunkgirl are darned well sick of seeing the tacky, cokewhore-circa-1974 look glorified by popular media. For every denim-skirt-wearing, tit-doctored, cowboy-hat-sporting wannabe supermodel type out there, we hope to find a sneering, in-your-face damsel with tattoos and an itchy trigger middle finger she’s not afraid to use against any wiseacre who tries to tell her she’s ugly for not conforming to the latest consumer trend as proscribed by a top popstar or vapid media darling. To us, a “hotpunkgirl” can even be a sweet, bespectacled librarian with a penchant for deviant prankery. It’s about attitude. It’s about style. It’s about making do with what’s at hand and having fun on one’s own terms.
