It's a long one, but I'm 700 or so pages in and having some fun with it. Anybody else given this one a shot? It's kind of adult Harry Potter-ish (less "we can do cool magic, but don't tell the muggles"/more politics/sociology and issues of actually blending the fact that some are resurrecting the art of English magic in the 1800s, and trying to navigate the government/press/public image of the time with a whole lot of history, origins, and side stories thrown in. There's actually a coherent, well written review by Keith Lawhere., which is where I got the rec from. EDIT: I thought that would put you directly to the review, but go to British Lit on the right, and it'll narrow it down considerably. Sorry. He does some cooking and baseball stuff as well, if that rings your bell....
