Saving the American Elm
Description
The majestic elm belongs to our natural and cultural history. It was the original Liberty Tree in Colonial Massachusetts, and the elm remains the State Tree today.
But since its introduction in 1931, Dutch elm disease (DED) has decimated the canopy of elms which once lined our streets. It is estimated that some 77 million elms succumbed to the disease.
Meanwhile, plant geneticists at the National Arboretum have been rigorously testing and identifying elm cultivars for their resistance to DED. "Valley Forge," "Princeton," and "New Harmony" have proven to be the top performers in the studies.
