The Dash Diet is designed for people with hypertension or pre-hypertension tendencies. The diet is meant to lower cholesterol and improve cardiac function. The Dash Diet is also advertised to create major weight loss results for people of all ages. The Dash Diet was created by a registered dietitian named Maria Heller. She holds a master's degree in the Science of Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University Of Chicago. Heller has also created other weight loss programs, but began the Dash Diet after she was diagnosed with high blood pressure in May of 2004. Heller says after she created and followed this program her blood pressure dropped and she lost 14 pounds.

This Diet program is said to be hard to follow initially, because some find it radical. It’s a bit confusing in its classification of foods and could lead users to be unsure as to how many servings are meant for what food group. This program requires a “big lifestyle change” in eating habits. Though the diet is said to be tough to begin, it’s advertised that the new book “The Dash Diet Action Plan” makes it easier to understand.
