- Tiffany Bauer was convinced to choose the photographic medium as her own by the intensity of the various interpersonal relationships that seemed to spring up along the way. After wrapping up those early studies in her native Kansas City, Bauer enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she focused on art, photography, and film. An “apprenticeship” spent at the Magnum agency’s offices in New York opened her eyes to some of photography’s more practical applications, enough so that she suppressed the fine-art ambitions and began shooting a kind of reportage work that she still finds more stimulating and suited to a person who thrives on that vital contact with others. Apart from her stint at Magnum, Bauer also had the good luck to train with modern masters Sebastião Salgado, James Nachtwey, and Elliot Erwitt, as well as collaborating on editorial projects such as Robert Capa’s Children of War, Children of Peace.
