Creating an account allows you to:
- Have a free online web presence.
- You will have your own "page" where you can write a bit about yourself. In addition, you will have a "user talk page" which you can use to communicate with others. You will be notified if someone writes a message to you there. Your e-mail address remains confidential.
- Any edits made while logged in will be assigned to your user name. You will be able to review your contributions by clicking "my contributions" which is only available when logged in.
- You don't need to reveal your offline identity, but having an account gives you an identity on this wiki that others will recognize. While anonymous contributions are welcome, logging in lets you build trust and respect through a history of good edits. This helps in allowing everyone to assume good faith. Unfortunately, the site does get vandalized, spammed and information gets uploaded by people who just want to advertise. Logging in allows distinguished and reliable contributors who make constructive edits to be more easily separated from spammers. Together we can collaborate to build the commons.
- Registering gives you the ability to make a customized "watch list". This feature shows up as a tab when logged in.
- You must be registered in order to upload pictures.
- Registered folks also have their own "Talk" pages, which acts as an internal messaging system, where people can leave notes and have conversations.
