Best Abs is a company developed by Shawn Phillips, who has created and distributed books and DVDs focused on weight loss and results specifically in the midsection. He is brother to Bill Phillips who has also written a fitness book and is the editor of Muscle Media Magazine. According to the website, Shawn Phillips has “expertise in training, nutrition and supplementation.” However, the site fails to list his credentials and where he received this expertise; it may be not safe to just assume he has traditional education in these fields.

Phillips has created both a DVD and book under the Best Abs label. The book is named Absolution- The Practical Solution for Building Your Best Abs, which focuses on creating “that coveted six-pack look.” The DVD is named Body of Work, which Phillips starred in, but did not actually develop. Absolution is by far what Phillips is best known for. According to the website, this book teaches readers how to “not diet” and how to incorporate aerobic and anaerobic exercise to achieve weight loss results. This book claims that dieting should not be done, but then outlines what is acceptable food and what is not, along with dictating precise times on when to consume allowed meals. This certainly sounds like a diet to me, despite Phillips’ stance that he refuses to diet “and urges you to do the same.” This book does run through a suggested exercise regimen. However, since this instructions must be read and not shown it may be difficult for fitness beginners to correctly transfer this knowledge to actual workouts. Also, there is absolutely no guidance or direction offered, so it would be up to the consumer to not only motivate themselves, but to also determine if they are appropriately and safely following the routine.
