A tour with A La Carte Italy Tours may well start in Venice. The heart of Venice is Saint Mark Square. There are two adjacent squares: the piazza itself, an immense rectangle measuring 176 m long and 82 wide, and the piazzetta ("little square") that opens out from the corner of the bell tower, towards the vast basin of the lagoon, called the Saint Mark basin, on which vaporetti and gondolas circulate among an incessant traffic, while in the distance you'll see larger vessels slowly marching by.

Here you are at the epicenter of Venice and Italy: pigeons and tourists rushing about incessantly, the latter forming the most amazing lines to visit the basilica or the bell tower.

The private custom tour may then go to San Remo and the Corso Imperatrice (Empress's promenade). Flanked by superb Canary palms, this promenade alongside the sea is one of the most elegant in Italian Liguria.

Milan: Galleria Vittorio Emanuele
Following the Mediterranean coast, the private tour of Italy will lead to Portofino. The Promenade of the Lighthouse is a must there. At nightfall the sun lights up the Gulf of Rapallo, this promenade runs past olive groves, yew trees and pines from the Italian village of Portofino to the Point of the same name and has superb viewpoints.

Further down the coastline, in Tarquinia, see the amazing Necropolis of the Banditaccia. This fine necropolis stands in a very serene area planted with pine and cypress trees. It is real Italian town, with a main road opening onto the tumulus shaped tombs, covered with grassy hillocks and which convey an unforgettable feeling of strangeness. Other tombs are made up of underground chambers , such as the tomb of the Reliefs, decorated with paintings and stuccos. An intense feeling of emotion emanates from this town whose people belonged to a mysteriously disappeared civilisation.

In the Vatican, stop at St. Peter's Square. This huge square and vestibule for St. Peter's Basilica, is undoubtedly the most famous in the world ! The work began in 1656, with Bernini incharge and under Pope Alexander VII. It was completed in1667. It has an almost circular shape (in fact an ellipse) and is lined on both sides by two semicircular colonnades, which form remarkably sober and solemn structures. An obelisk stands in the centre of the square.

This guided tour of Italy continues with Naples, with its Decumano Maggiore. The decumanus was the main East-West thoroughfare built in the Roman grid formation. Today, this street (coinciding mainly with Via dei Tribunali) is lined with such palaces as the Spinelli di Laurino palace, and numerous churches. The church of the Jeronimites contains works by Pietro Bernini, Pietro da Cortona and Francesco Solimena. San Paolo Maggiore will astonish you with its sumptuous Baroque interior. Further on, the church of Purgatorio ad Arco has a small cemetery where the ceremony of washing bones to obtain grace is practised.

Italy has an abundance of history and life, and a private custom tour with A La Carte Italy Tours is one of most enjoyable ways to discover it.
