History
The company we today know as WellPoint was formed on November 30th, 2004, when WellPoint Health Networks, Inc. merged with Anthem, Inc. WellPoint Health Networks was originally formed in 1986.
In 1992, WellPoint Health Networks became the chief operator of Blue Cross of California's managed care business, shortly before Blue Cross of California completed the conversion of all of their business to a legal for-profit status. This resulted in a restructuring which left WellPoint Health Networks Inc. as the parent organization of Blue Cross of California.
Meanwhile, two Indianapolis-based corporations who were also parent organizations of Blue Cross merged to become Anthem, Inc. Anthem went on to become part of WellPoint.
In 2005, WellPoint acquired Lumenos as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Lumenos' business is to offer health-directed savings account and health-reimbursement account plans.
Business Profile
WellPoint, Inc., collected revenues of a little over $45 billion as of 2005. They employ 42,000 people from their offices in Indiana. Their ranking on the Fortune 500 list is #38.
In the March 19th, 2007 issue of Fortune magazine, WellPoint, Inc. earned the distinction of being the number-one most-admired company in the category of insurance and managed health care, beating out their two main competitors Aetna and UnitedHealth Group.
It is estimated that one in nine Americans receives coverage for their medical care through WellPoint's health plans.
