Backlinks from external pages to a cared for page is what (in general) the page caretakers makes happy, due to the following reasons:
- more attention -> more traffic -> more possible collaboration or more success (in the widest sense)
- higher Google Rank -> more attention
In wikis it is technically very easy for users to create backlinks.
The quality and number of the backlinks make the difference between fostering or damaging a cared for page.
Everybody knows how LinkSpam can hurt the quality of a page and everybody knows that backlinks from unfavorable places can demolish the quality growth of a page.
So engaged page-authors are very touchy about backlinks.
A step towards fair backlinking is the proposed usage of BiLinks. BiLinking two pages A and B, means setting up a link from A to B and a link from B to A, sharing responsability for two pages with the intention, that the context of A improves the quality of B and vice versa.
