Travel insurance
Harry celebrated his 65th birthday by taking his wife, 2 children and 7 grandchildren to the Mediterranean coast of Turley for a five-day holiday. He found the package deal on the internet, called his sons and everything was laid on inside an hour. The resort was called the Empire Village and it was in the middle of what is called the Turkish Riviera, fast becoming the playground of Europe. Travel insurance, asked Janet, Harry’s wife. What, for 5 days? Forget it, said Harry confidently. What a blast! They all met at the airport, took up 3 rows on the plane, the little ones bursting with excitement and Harry beaming proudly and benevolently at his family. At the airport there was mini-bus waiting for them and they were whisked along a winding coastal road to the hotel. This is when I wish we had taken out travel insurance, thought Harry. This driver is trying to out-drive Michael Shumacher. That’s about the time Harry felt the first pain in his chest, which he put down to the stale piece of cake he had been served on the plane. The family settled into their rooms at the hotel and met up at a huge breakfast in the morning. Everyone was ecstatic and Harry was worried about the pain which persisted. Did I make a mistake by ignoring the travel insurance, he wondered idly. After breakfast the children raced off to the pool. Their parents followed half an hour later and Harry and Janet came down an hour later. Harry chose a spot in the shade, put down a beach-chair to relax in and collapsed next to it. Janet screamed and her 2 sons came running over. Harry seemed to be choking and was gasping for breath. One of the sons raced up to the hotel reception yelling for them to call an ambulance. Harry was taken to the hospital in a nearby town. The medical staff whipped him off to the intensive care unit and hooked him up to the oxygen. The admin staff cornered Janet and her sons and began asking questions about how they were going to pay. When they asked about travel insurance, Janet said they had not bothered with it. This was greeted by icy stares from the staff. Harry recovered and is paying the hospital charges monthly over the next five years.
