The Words Work Network exists solely to reinvent and restore to prominence the art of writing in American high schools. Over the past several years, polls taken by Public Agenda and Education Week show that employers and college professors believe poor writing skills to be the number one problem of graduating high school seniors. In 2001, Webdelsol.Com, the largest nonprofit publisher of periodical contemporary literature in the U.S., established Wow-Schools.Net—better known as the "Words Work Network," or "WoW Net"—to promote the highest standard of writing and contemporary literary art to high school students.
At WoW Net, we work towards our mission by first discovering and including in our network the finest high school writing programs in the country, those which set the standard. We then immerse these programs into an environment of publication ownership, national attention, and literary excellence, and structure them into a competitive and activity-focused community composed of other member schools and organizations, teachers and students. Next, we seek out and involve those high school programs around the country that will benefit most from being a part of WoW Net. A summary of our specific goals are noted here.
By setting the highest standards, by stimulating writing of all types, and at all levels, by publishing new voices that possess energy and insight, emotional power and courage, freshness of perspective and strength of subject matter, and by promoting these young writers to a national readership, WoW Net initiatives and publications raise the writing bar for all high school students regardless of whether they attend public or private high schools, or whether they live in inner city, rural, or suburban America.
