Mark,
OK, here is the latest:
I had reason to edit one of my client pages: "thetulsabricklayer.com"
The bottom line is this: Captcha popped up and WITH the dialog box. I was using my regular browser, IE7.
At the moment I can only attribute the difference between captcha and no captcha to the fact that my page, mycelticrings.com, is being treated different because I am in the family. If this is really the case then I have a special suggestion:
Suggestion: Members of the family should continue to be spared Google Ads at the top of their pages, but EVERYTHING else should be the same as non-family members (civilians?). This would allow family members to notice and report problems that the civilians must be having. Newbies (new users) will not recognize or understand anything about the problems they may be having and, therefore, will not know or be interested in reporting any problems that they have.
By the way, the captcha dialog box for entering the text was a bit sluggish, but it did pop up without my needing to refresh the code. I still believe that the present form of the Captcha text is OVERKILL. 5 large graphic character letters, easy for humans to read, will surely be sufficient and a KINDNESS to all users when dealing with captcha. It will also conserve system resources, especially as AboutUs usership grows. Here is a link to the way I am using captcha on one of my client sites: http://www.legalclosing.com/security/validate.php
Techno-geeks, like me, have powerful urges to "show off" our techno-toys. As a psychologist I can tell you that this is a normal ego thing that we should learn to restrain; we all want to be liked, admired, highly regarded. I observe myself, even now, sending hidden messages when I speak or write to people. The surface message is something the needs to be communicated, the hidden message is "see how smart I am", "please think nice things about me"... well, I'm sure you get the idea. The urge to impress others is strong, even if they are anonymous...people we will never personally meet. We all want to have an effect on other people, it is a basic need, but under many circumstances we must rise above our egoistic desires and provide the most efficient and helpful version of our techno-toys as we can. This is not easy to do, I know from personal and professional experience. See how smart I am?
Best Regards, Hugh
Have you seen the Sandbox
Hey Hugh, I noticed you were trying to test the wiki code on your page. Have you seen the Sandbox ? Its an area where we test out our wiki code and formatting. --Sa'ad [ talk•email•chat ] 01:50, 6 June 2008 (PDT)
Hi Sa'ad,
I haven't used the Sandbox yet, but I would not have used it for this particular purpose. A major concern of mine is that there might have been something differernt about the way that my page was being treated. Specifically, the Captcha routine was not showing up when I made and saved changes to my "mycelticrings.com" page, but was showing up when I made and saved any of my other pages. "Special" treatment is a boost for the ego, but it doesn't enable me to help debug problems that I may encounter, it just adds more complications to finding problems. I will get to play in the sandbox before too long. Thanks for your input.
Hugh
- Hugh, The Captcha usually pops up when the system detects someone adding an external link to the page as a way to prevent linkspam. Are you saying that you were adding links to your featured pages and it did not pop where as doing the same to non featured pages prompted the captcha? It shouldn't pop up while adding regular text but only if you add external links. --Sa'ad [ talk•email•chat ] 21:28, 8 June 2008 (PDT)
Re: Please correct these errors:
Hello Hugh, good to hear from you. Those words/phrases on top of the page are actually tags, which help people search this page. I couldn't agree more with you that these tags should be absolutely relevant to the website. You can use the small "x" on each tag in order to remove it. Also hit the show all topics button to view what other topics are there. I think there might be a few more irrelevant topics there. The "CamelCase" used in these tags acts the same way as a space in between them. Because of the Case Space functionality we have on AboutUs, CelticBands and Celtic Bands are essentially the same thing with respect to the results. But if you prefer to have a space between these, you can simply remove the topic and add it again. I can also remove all the tags if you want a clean slate to work on. Please let me know if there's anything else I can help you with. Best, Asad | *~talk~* 22:25, 18 January 2009 (PST)
Hello again, Asad
OK, I understand about the "CamelCase". My feeling that, if at all possible, that entire top section of my page should be re-located to the bottom of the page. It detracts from the look and feel of what was the top section of the web page. It makes me feel that my efforts have been wasted. The visible CamelCase" text is ugly and I don't want it to be the first thing that people see when they visit the page. What can be done about this?
Thanks, Hugh
