[Poor road infrastructure a cause of poverty in the Maa districts By Ole Mepukori Senior Editor the weekly monitor
Since independence, forty years ago, the road network to and from Maa districts have been in pathetic states of disrepair. To a foreigner it is absolute ludicrous to ignore the infrastructure of important economic districts. Narok district is home to the world famous Maasai Mara game reserve, wheat, barley and potato producer. The district is synonymous with a poor roads network, 90% of which are not gazetted. The Mai-mahiu –Narok has been in line for re-carpeting for the last eight years and the Narok-Mara road is such a bad state that tourists were openly complaining. A local industry investor ole Tome said, “if it were not for the poor state of the roads I would have added a number of vans and employed many young people”. Curio dealers in the area concur with this and add that their businesses would have been robust if tourists were in better physical state. Loitokitok district which is the second biggest maize producer after Trans-nzoia and borders Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro district is a gateway to Tanzania. Local farmers in the district have been praying for miracles for a long time. The state of the roads has been impassable all year round. Mr. Antony ole Mepukori fmr senior chief Rombo location had this to say, ”we should market the road as a prime location for the Rhino charge competition”. The district has only a ten kilometer stretch from Loitokitok township to Illasit border post. Kajiado district borders Tanzania and home to Amboseli game reserve, Samburu is home to buffalo and Samburu game reserves and none of the districts have tarmac roads. ]]]]
