Trip and budget planning:

People arrive in Kathmandu and rush around looking for the cheapest and quickest solution to their trip – often a trip they have dreamed about for many years. We have observed that they often end up with “less” for “more.” Our recommendation is to be clear in your mind how much time you have, what your “goal” is, and to be realistic in your ambitions.

Our long time friend and regular visitor to Nepal (32 times) David Durkan says: “Do your home work before you arrive in the chaotic city of Kathmandu – you will save time and money, the frustration level will be lower, and you experience so much more.”

Therefore we have put together a number of pointers that you may find useful - and of course we hope you will use our services. Do not hesitate to ask, as David says: “There are no stupid questions - except the ones you forgot to ask!”

Planning your trip.

Costs:

Kathmandu

Airport transfers: Transport to/from airport/hotel: taxi costs are between USD 10 and 15 – depending on location, and number of pax/baggage. We can arrange airport pick up/delivery – for a set fee, on knowing your requirements.

Accommodation: We can book and confirm accommodation in centrally placed hotels with a span from USD 5. - To USD 200 - - all depending on your requirements/budget. Service charge (10%), and Government taxes (13%) are charged by the majority of hotels in the middle price range.

Guide service We can arrange half and whole day excursions in and around the city of Kathmandu. Tell us about your interests/time available and we will provide a suggested itinerary/cost overview. City Guide: English speaker - $50 per day Other language speaking guide - $70 per day Transport (taxi, or mini bus), entrance to sites/museums, etc. are extra.

Departing Kathmandu (or Pokhara): Often forgotten, there is a cost here also: rickshaw or taxi to the bus station, or airport. We can arrange this, or you can arrange it directly with your hotel.

Bus to start of trek: Two main alternatives:

a. Local bus. From one of the city’s “bus parks” – we recommend you pre-book a ticket, especially at festival times. “Air-conditioned” often means a broken window, and “express bus” that they have a spare tire, and a tool box. However, to travel in Nepal by local bus is a social and cultural experience – where you meet both people and land at close hand. To the far west or Far East of the country you may have to change bus on route. Inexpensive, crowded, but they usually stop on way so you can buy refreshments, Dal Bhat, and go to the bathroom. Some charge extra for baggage (can be a scam). Get a ticket, and a fixed seating number!

Mini-bus (local). Same as above.

b. Bus Company. There is a number of reputable private bus companies running regular services to the main hubs, like Pokhara. They are comfortable, air conditioned, usually mechanically well maintained – and the ticket price often includes a dal bhat lunch on the way (check when booking). Baggage space included.

Note: A and B usually stop at end bus station, which may necessitate a taxi to your hotel.

Mini Bus (private): book for a group, hotel pick up/delivery. Private car (with driver). As for Mini Bus private.

We can arrange all forms of transport – local bus tickets are cheap, but we have to send a person to the bus station to book and pay for in advance for “next day” tickets – hence we must take a service charge to cover this. For Bus Company and private mini bus bookings we will charge the actual ticket cost, plus 10% to cover our costs.

Flying to start the trek: We can arrange hotel pick up and book tickets to all airports in Nepal. Prices are fixed, by the airlines.

On the trek Permits etc: 1. TIMS Card (Trekking Information Management System) USD$ 20 per person. Mandatory for all trekkers 2. Everest National Park fee: USD $15 per person. 3. Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP): USD $30 per person. 4. Langtang Region National Park: USD $15 per person. 5. Upper Mustang: USD $500 for 10 days, then $50 per day per person. 6. To provide this service we require a copy of your insurance card with contact details, and signed authorisation that we can act on your behalf. For this super back up we charge: US $25 per pax. All other expenses charged for such a rescue, such as doctor’s fees, medicine, hospital, transport, accommodation, re-booking of flight to your home country we will settle with yourself and/or your insurance company “after” everything is in order.

Agency Charge: We aim to avoid “hidden costs” that will take you by surprise: All our charges (except local bus bookings) are based on the actual”cost price” – once calculated in full, we charge a 10% service charge for all our services.
