Rooted in the bubbling Los Angeles music scene, the Up Above Records groundbreaking release was Key-Kool & Rhettmatic's debut album Kozmonautz in 1995. The Source Magazine, Rap Pages and URB Magazine gave much critical praise to the album, and the 12inch singles were a favorite amongst college and major radio mix-show DJ's; however, due to distribution woes, the full length CD was a difficult find for hungry hip-hop heads, and remains an underground cult-classic and a rare find.
Up Above Records made a potent impact in 1997, introducing the world to L.A. underground heroes the Visionaries. With no promotion budget, the Visionaries adopted a grass-roots approach with a strong work ethic, grinding throughout the U.S., Japan, and Europe, armed with a lethal live show. This face to face method has left a strong impression on fans worldwide familiarizing them to the multiple Visionaries releases on Up Above Records.
