Description

My name is Graham Welsh. Born in Edinburgh in 1958, I moved to Ayrshire in 1972 to continue my education at Belmont Academy. A few years later I started work as a wood machinist in Prestwick. While I was there I developed a love of wood-crafting which was to stay with me.

Through my family's interest in music, more importantly playing classical stringed instruments, I slowly learned about the general set up and characteristics of the modern classical instrument. I guess my passion for the violin had begun, so I decided to hone my skills and to increase my knowledge. I achieved this by studying for an HNC in Musical Instrument Technology (Stringed), at Anniesland College. I own Ayrshire's first and only Stringed Instrument Workshop called Ayrshire Violin Studio and I'm considered to be one of Scotland's 'Top Five' Luthiers, who is highly regarded as a setter up of violins.

Since graduating I have sought to meet as many violin players, collectors, restorers and people generally interested in the violin family of instruments, so that we may share our knowledge and experiences. I have a hands on and very open approach to repairing, restoring and setting up instruments, and I have found this communicative aspect of my work very rewarding. I hope to extend this friendly and open approach to everyone who visits here. I always guarantee a high quality of produce and service.
