The grey, misty September drizzle barely registered as we waited in line in the school playground. Every now and then the watery sun made a half-hearted attempt to burn through the cloud, and for a moment I could swear I saw a hint of a rainbow.
Around us dozens of parents waited anxiously as their children ran around the yard looking for old friends, meeting new ones, laughing and shouting with excitement.
Carol and I stood, waiting patiently for the sound of the school bell to signal the start of the first day of our daughter's life as a pupil. She was oblivious to the significance of what was about to happen, we were only too well aware.
