- Because of the eminent roll SPM’s are playing in the multidisciplinary scientific world of today, a standard SPM data-format should be considered. XML has proven to be a description language, which is well applicable for standardized, structured, scientific data formats. The versatility of the proposed XML-based SPM data-format as well as the open character of the SPML format makes it suitable as a standard SPM data-format. The widely spread concern regarding performance issues on ASCII based file formats seems to be of limited importance for the proposed SPML data-format. Adoption of SPML as a standard by prominent research institutes and the support by the leading manufacturers of SPM’s are needed to make this data-format widely accepted as a standard. The possibility of documenting, publishing and exchanging quantitative SPM results makes SPML an appealing choice as a container for SPM-data. In order to accelerate the process of acceptance of this standard, software is needed to interface to the file format. An extensive LabVIEW library will be available soon.
