Nothing is private when you’re Deaf
“My mum had Rubella before I was born. By the time I was 16 months old, she was told I was Deaf. My parents were told not to gesture or sign because it would distract me from lip-reading, so I’ve only been able to learn to communicate more recently. I feel lonely. People don’t understand me so they ignore me… I find it difficult to get jobs. We have to be in the background because we can’t talk to customers.
Sometimes I have problems if I go shopping. I have to write everything down and people stare at me. I feel embarrassed. I wish everyone would learn to sign. If I go to the doctor, dentist or hospital I take my key worker to help me. Nothing is private when you’re deaf.”
We are actively involved in providing supported living, advocacy, outreach and club house activities for deaf people in need of emotional support.
