In the early days of the year 2005, Phillip Chipping wanted to protect the face of his watch from scratching. It was a new watch, and his older watch was so scratched up as to be almost beyond hope. He was not about to let that happen again - not to his brand new solar-powered Citizen.
So he decided to protect the face of his new watch with a special film, a film that had originally been created for the U.S. military to protect the leading edges of helicopter blades, a film so tough that it could withstand hundred mile-per-hour dust, dirt and sand.
He traced a crude circle onto the film and cut it out quickly with a pair of scissors. The edges were rough - the film was so tough that it didn't cut well with scissors, despite it only being .008 inches thick - but the film worked. It worked beautifully.
