Title

Strangers Helping Strangers - Helping End Hunger, One Concert at a Time - Since 1998

Description

The origins of Strangers Helping Strangers (SHS) dates back to late 1997, when fans of the Burlington, VT band Strangefolk saw an opportunity to help those less fortunate by collecting non-perishable food at various Strangefolk concerts throughout the Northeast and donating it to food banks and charities in the cities and towns Strangefolk played. The first official food drive was held in 1998, and since then SHS has collected well over 30,000 items for charities from Maine to Delaware and as far west as California. In addition to working closely with Strangefolk, SHS has expanded to work with other bands such as the Assembly of Dust, Dark Star Orchestra, Max Creek, Zen Tricksters, Scarecrow Collection, U-Melt, Rev Tor Band and many more. SHS offers incentives and prizes to those who donate at their events, including live CD’s, merchandise, tickets to future concerts and much more.

SHS began with a volunteer group of five individuals and has grown by leaps and bounds to its current level. Today, SHS boasts a volunteer core of nearly thirty official volunteers, in addition to many friends and family members who help the organization in multiple ways. All of these volunteers dedicate their time and energy to this cause, and SHS is forever grateful to all of those who have helped - past, present and future!! Leading SHS has been a difficult and time consuming task for four people throughout the history of the organization. However, it has been a labor of love for each - truly worth the time, effort and money spent to grow the cause. Past Executive Directors of SHS include: Kat Harless & Tina Campbell (co-directors) from Fall 1997 to September 2000; Tina Campbell from September 2000 to December 2001; Marc Drouin from December 2001 to September 2003; and Donald Pearson from September 2003 to the present. Over the past year, Strangers Helping Strangers has been working towards fully incorporating and gaining official 501c3 non-profit status. A benefit concert was held on May 15, 2004 at Mexicali Blues in Teaneck, NJ in order to raise funds to turn this long-standing dream into a reality. In July 2004, SHS became fully incorporated and filed for 501c3 status. The application is currently being reviewed, and SHS has gained preliminary 501c3 non-profit status.
