Description

XDarwin: XFree86 on Mac OS X. See XonX at SourceForge. I implemented the original rootless mode. It has since undergone substantial revision by developers at Apple and elsewhere.

Art Critic: an attempt to teach a computer to recognize Impressionist paintings. We used image segmentation algorithms to distill the data and reduce dimensionality before invoking a classifier. The attempt was only moderately successful (described by my partner as "promising at best").
