Title
Riverside Inn - Santa Cruz
Description
The City of Santa Cruz, California, is situated on the northern part of Monterey Bay about 74 miles south of San Francisco and 30 miles from San Jose.
In 1769, Spanish explorer Don Gaspar de Portola discovered the area and named it Santa Cruz, meaning Holy Cross. After Mexico assumed control of it in the 1820s, Americans started settling in it, and when California became a state in 1849, Santa Cruz was named one of its 27 counties.
Due to its scenic splendour, the turn of the 19th century saw Santa Cruz become a holiday spot. Local promoter Fred Swanton persevered through fire and failure to build the Beach Boardwalk in 1907, one of the first beachside amusement parks on the west coast.
