The Language Of The Search Enginestm

"Relevance" and "relevant" are frequently used terms in science, law, the internet and even in general conversation. The concept of relevance itself is the essential concept that makes search engines function effectively. Google and other major search engines created special programs designed to rate the comparative degree of

relevance for billions (yes, BILLIONS) of web pages. If a searcher uses terms that are very relevant to what he is searching for then the search engine will quickly return the best results. So, what lies at the heart of relevance, what does it mean?

Putting relevance to work best serves both the searching users and search engines.

My understanding of relevance developed over a 10 year period, related mostly to my occupation in the field of Website PROMOTION, now more commonly known as SEO, "Search Engine Optimization." I am so excited about this field that I am constantly finding new ways to introduce relevance as the language of the search engines. This work and interest has expanded my comprehension of the "Language Of The Search Engines" way beyond my expectations. This domain page is dedicated to generating a serious interest in this study, and even increasing the sales of my recently released monograph titled: "Relevance: The Language Of The Search Engines."

The following is a direct link to the promotional page through which you can order a printed copy of the Hugh's Relevance Handbook, a Manual On Relevance:

The Making Of Relevant Web Pages

Relevance contains aspects of all of these terms: pertinent, pertinence, germane, important, significant, relevant. Each of these words is "relevant to relevance." Additionally, relevance is always dependent on the context in which it is used.

Asking Stupid Questions Teaches Relevance

I grew up hearing this phrase:
"Ask a stupid question and you get a stupid answer."

I learned that it was true; it still is. When I was a youngster I didn't realize that this phrase was probably my first lesson in relevance.

My professional experience is that Google is the search engine that provides the most relevant, most useful, most helpful, pertinent, and important search results, but ONLY when I ask a smart question.

The smartest questions are the most relevant ones. Smartness seems contagious; Google catches it from me when I ask smart questions.... well it seems like this sometimes.

The most common cause of stupid (irrelevannt) searches is that the searcher does not have a clear and specific idea of what he/she is really looking for. How can you find something if you don't know what it looks like, or what it does, or what it is made of? Not easy, right?

The best search method is to exclude words that are not related to what you are looking for. If you are looking for listings about hocky pucks do not include your eye color, or ring size in the search. The smartest search that would give you the greatest number of results is simply "hockey pucks." If you require that the hockey pucks be hand made then search for "hand made hockey pucks", or "hockey pucks hand made". Alternates for "hand made" could be "handcrafted" or "hand crafted." Do you want to shop and compare prices for them? Ok, search using a phrase such as this one: "shop compare hand made hockey pucks". The idea is to include the most relevant words and exclude the ones that are irrelevannt.
