Description
After seeing Wayne's photo of these two people in their home (see shepherd and his wife), I wonder about my own "stuff" and how I spend my days. Someone remarked it was unfortunate I had so many chores to do. I looked up "chore" and saw its connotation of an "unpleasant task." Is it a chore to till the garden, plant the seeds, and water and care for them in return for food that I don't have to drive to purchase? Or pay for? Maybe so; maybe not. My fingernails would be clean and ready for a manicure, my muscles wouldn't ache, I wouldn't be sweaty and I would have more free time. To do what? Eat out? Shop? Decorate? Maybe even watch TV?
With less than 1% of Americans living in a TV-free household, I am a minority. Because I have never owned one, I don't have the experience of getting excited about seeing someone else playing a sport or having a love affair. Admittedly, I can watch snake handlers safely display rattlesnakes on a TV nature show, but it isn't as memorable as getting a pair out from underneath the porch last summer. Maybe I can also watch a Luna moth emerge from her chrysalis in time-lapse photography instead of chancing upon one unfolding her wings in the woods. But maybe I do know what I am missing.
Another question related to stuff is how much is enough? One TV is fine but then there's another for the bedroom, the kitchen and of course, the portable for outside. Does this really make better informed and happier people?
