Projects:People Pages

DistributedPlanningGame / People Pages (Scott)

Why?

To have good and useful personal pages for all users

Done When

  • We've conceptualized how people pages on AboutUs should look and function
  • We've created well spec'd dev cards and inserted them into the planning game

How can I help?

  • Meeting Monday Aug. 20 at 11am PST
  • Print out user page examples for meeting

Discussion

  • One thing wiki is about is working together. People pages should help facilitate that process.
  • Where should people pages reside on AboutUs? (e.g. aboutus.org/RealName, aboutus.org/User:RealName) We should pick one, and only one place.
    • Yes, please choose one only. It can be hard to find someone's people page. This is also a problem with Talk. Some People pages don't have a link to Talk or have a link that only allows New Talk. I prefer to read previous talk to see if my topic has been covered and sometimes I prefer to add to a talk topic rather than start a new one User:Di | talk
      • Di, one trick I use is to click that link to add a new talk message, and then instead of writing anything, click "save page." I get the whole page! Ted Ernst | talk
  • Should an IRC Chat button be added ?
I'm not sure a link to an IRC channel about AboutUs is relevant to individual people pages. Can you explain why you think it'd be a good idea?

Little idea

I thought of adding it to the AboutUs Community or AboutUsStaff (User Pages) but I accidentally mentioned here.Sorry! :)

Ways people pages could work

a) Fully editable standard wiki page
b) Partially editable page, with some non-wiki markup editable content
c) Non-wiki markup, but fully editable user pages

Possible functionality

  • Bookmarks - There could be a bookmark button on each page that would add a link to your bookmarks. The bookmarks on your page would link to the wiki page with an additional link to the site.
  • Friends - There could be a way to add friends and see them from your personal page
  • Lists - A way for users to easily create lists of wiki pages (examples: Yelp, Amazon
  • Prominently displayed contributions - Could be a top 10 list of pages they've edited with a link to their full contributions
  • Blog - There could be a blog on pages only the owner could edit.
  • Talk pages that actually work, and work well.
  • Private messages - a way to communicate privately over the wiki
  • Pictures - An area where users can upload their own pictures that are connected to their account
  • E-mail option
  • Biography of that person
  • Online Status - showing whether a user is online or not
  • Prominently displayed watch list - Make the user watch list a more visible and important part of the personal page
  • Avatar - an easy way to (like drag and drop or big button) so that people can upload an avatar which can be used in various modes of internal communication.
Some people pictures as 'icons or their reviews' can also reside on AboutUs Front Screen Page.
  • Invitations - an easy way to invite your friends to join AboutUs
  • Member Since - Shows when the user registered

One Vote for Non-Wiki Markup

After looking at the personal pages linked above, I am in favor of non-wiki markup but fully editable personal pages. The advantage of wiki-markup is that the personal page can become a training ground for wiki, however the disadvantage is that by doing so we institute a technological litmus test in order to use a personal page and become a part of the community. None of our competitors demand that their users know how to write wikitext in order to have a beautiful, functional personal page, why should we? Blake Hinckley 10:40, 13 August 2007 (PDT)

What would it be, if not wiki markup? TedErnst

Discussion

We might add 'Area of Interest' or 'Personal Interest' or 'What I like?' which would reflect likings of a persons e.g Photography...
  • Date and Time can be added at the corner of the page
  • A link of AboutUs 'About AboutUs' may reside on the upper corners of people pages
