Description
Located in the heart of Europe, Poland originated in the mid-10th century and has a rich history of invasions and conquests.
In Warsaw, the capital, the old town's Market Square has three beautiful town houses, the facades of which, symbolic of the architectural mixture of past centuries, offer a very colourful picture that combines gothic, baroque, Renaissance and neoclassical styles. The Warsaw History Museum and the Museum of Literature which is next door have chosen to take up residence among these buildings. It is the same for the museum dedicated to the life and work of the poet Adam Mickiewicz. To the South of the Rynek, the Zapiecek gallery presents exhibitions of modern art.
In Krakow, see the Cloth Hall. This surprising monument with a yellow ochre frontage is lined with arcaded galleries supported on columns with carved capitals. The Cloth Hall was built in the 14C, and has been renovated many times. The mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements make give the building an offbeat, engaging personality. There are now shops and stalls selling souvenirs and crafts inside.
Also in Krakow, the Wawel cathedral remains the timeless witness of Poland's history. The country's monarchs were crowned and buried here. Dedicated to St Stanislas and St Wenceslas, this is the third church built on this site, this time in the Gothic style. At the transept crossing, an impressive black marble monument is decorated with gilded bronzes; it is known as the St Stanislas Confession. The bishop-martyr's mausoleum was built between 1626 and 1629 to plans by Giovanni Trevano.
Cracow (or Krakow), the time-honoured residence of Poland's kings, is amply entitled, by its numerous monuments of ancient civilization and art, to take the rank among famous historical towns.
In prehistoric times, the caves in a range of hills extending to the north of Cracow were the oldest dwellings for the men of the Jura limestone period. The country all round the present site of the town is traversed by charming glens, overshadowed with woods and enlivened by rippling rivulets : such are the Czerna Valley near Krzeszowice, the Pradnik Valley with its ruins of Ojcow Castle and " Dog's Rock " (Pieskowa Skala], the Mnikow Valley extending to the south. Within the precincts of the town, several hiils arise : the Castle Hill - called Wawel, the Skalka, the Krzemionki, and St. Bronislawa's Hill, which gives a wide view of the plains bordered by the distant chain of the Carpathian Mountains. The water has eaten deep caves into the solid rock of all those hills, and these numerous caves now are valued as the oldest repositories of remains of human civilization in the Stone Age.
